  1. It's the last place finish this year that really has the knives out for Bloom.
  2. And then there's the bullpen.
  3. Duquette's Red Sox and Theo's Red Sox never finished last. One of the things driving Sox fans batty right now is the 5 last place finishes since 2012. Bloom is somewhat the victim of much higher expectations that Sox fans have now too, no question about that.
  4. Probably not. The real question is whether there is any FA we want to sign at the money they're going to get.
  5. The Sox don't have any luxuries at all. They're a 78 win team that has gotten significantly worse since the season ended.
  6. Do you think we're going to get a bat like Abreu for cheap? Who might that be?
  7. The Red Sox are the team that needs to win this offseason the most. Patience, discipline, reported interest and another last place finish just aren't going to cut it.
  8. All the prices are going to seem way too high this offseason, methinks. Might be the inflationary principle of too much money chasing too few goods.
  9. Maybe we'll get a Rich Hill half-year contract for a Christmas stocking stuffer.
  10. Of course my inner pom-pom waver clings to the hope that Bloom will soon make my nightmare look silly.
  11. Maybe "complementary piece" would be a good description. If you plug Abreu into the 2022 Astros you get these fWAR numbers for position players: Alvarez 6.6 Altuve 6.6 Bregman 5.5 Tucker 4.7 Abreu 3.9 Pena 3.4 McCormick 2.0
  12. I have this disturbing vision of Bloom and his minions swamped in spreadsheets, hunting for value plays, shocked by the prices for top talent, and slightly paralyzed by all they have to do and all that's against them.
  13. Two Encarnacions, I see.
  14. Not sure why you see Abreu as a role player. He played 157 games this year.
  15. Astros to sign Jose Abreu. Rich get richer.
  16. Based on that sequence, his OPS+ for 2023 and 2024 should be 84.
  17. There was a time things seemed to happen at the meetings. I guess agents were hanging around there too.
  18. And Moncada cost $63 million, let's not forget.
  19. That's true. But even before that we were commenting on how the winter meetings didn't seem to be much of a catalyst any more. And why would they be any more? In-person interaction has become kind of an optional thing.
  20. I think it's been a while since the winter meetings resulted in a flurry of moves.
  21. Next question is how does this decline compare to the numbers across baseball for the same period.
  22. Possibly. A 2.0 fWAR in the first season of an $85 million contract isn't very exciting, though.
  23. Devers is the only unequivocally impactful prospect acquired by the Red Sox since the 2011 draft, in terms of major league production. After Devers you're talking about Margot and Benintendi. Moncada hasn't done much yet. Kopech and Houck and Bello have potential. It's not much wonder we're in the situation we're in with that kind of track record.
  24. Yankee fans are even harder on their team than Red Sox fans are. They booed Judge.
