  1. I think he's just doing what he's being paid to do. The last 2 seasons the Sox have apparently insisted on pretending the games still matter until mathematically eliminated.
  2. Gray seems like a very appropriate target.
  3. I realize that. At least we can see there's a possibility of making good signings that don't cost a mint. We could trade Mayer in a package for an ace and that could blow up spectacularly in our faces. We all know there is no guarantee of success with any signing or any trade.
  4. ARod was a playoff chocker except for that year he was on the undetected roids and making love to Kate Hudson!
  5. Kevin Gausman would have been a super-duper signing. 5 years/$110 mill 10.9 fWAR so far in 2 seasons. Any other starters doing better over the last two seasons? He didn't costs any prospects and his contract is not unreasonable. I think maybe it's mid-range signings like this that are the answer. No guarantees, of course, but what pitcher is guaranteed any more?
  6. The fact Rafaela hasn't been playing every game has something to do with the team still having a remote chance of making the playoffs. And thev're sort of eased him into things. He and Abreu should be playing almost every game like now, though.
  7. Yep, the only things left to see are whether we can stay ahead of the Yanks and whether we stay above .500. Vegas is probably saying no to both.
  8. It's not going to look like much of a plan if Chaim gets fired. It'll be very reminiscent of Ben's "five year plan".
  9. Is that an excuse? If he had money to spend on Story and Yoshida, he had money to spend on a starter.
  10. Houck did OK as closer last year. The only reason he went back in the rotation is that Bloom didn't notice we needed more starters.
  11. He's 6th on the team in OPS. Whoopee.
  12. What you're missing is that my complaints are directed against Bloom, for spending money that could have gone toward pitching, on an expensive DH who is being stuck in left field and contributing to our lousy defense. It pisses me off that our budget was so restricted, and it pisses me off more that we used such a big chunk of it this way.
  13. You saw mvp's posts about the Sox reported interest in Stearns. That's smoke.
  14. Why not? He was our big signing this year. He has a 0.7 fWAR. He was signed as a get-on-base guy but pitchers adjusted to him and now he's striking out much more and walking much less. Why shouldn't I be picking on a bad signing? I don't get it.
  15. The inning splits couldn't be much more decisive.
  16. OK, career: 1 2.43 2 1.22 3 3.03 4 5.15 5 5.16 Think I'd still like him out after 3.
  17. Is Henry going to do the 4 years and out again? That would make it 3 times in a row.
  18. Home/road splits: Home 308/366/487 853 OPS Road 275/324/431 755 OPS Like many hitters, he has gotten a bump from Fenway. On the road, totally mediocre.
  19. Looks worse than bad at this point.
  20. Well, as the old saying goes, your unfounded speculation is as good as mine.
  21. For 3 inning stints he's been better than those guys. They're all expendable, though.
  22. Agreed, but I've also been taking flak for my criticism of Yoshida.
  23. 2023 ERA by inning: 1 4.24 2 1.59 3 0.53 4 6.88 5 9.00 6 18.00 Sure looks like removal after 3 would work best!
  24. Please pardon my disgust with Bloom's roster construction and allocations of apparently limited funds.
  25. If he's really good for 1-3 innings why would you trade him? It's pitching we need.
