And personally I've never been one to moan and groan about the Price contract. It seemed like a solid choice at the time, he helped win a WS. But after that his contract started to be viewed as an insurmountable disaster. If the Price contract made these owners gun-shy, we can forget Yamamoto, Snell or Nola.

Yeah, I think 5 WAR is setting the bar too high. 4 WAR is excellent. 5 is rare as you say.

I think when you're talking about the payroll budget, it IS a zero sum game. If you spend 18 million AAV on Yoshida, that's 18 million less you have for pitching and other needs.

Yeah, I guess it's smart to draft piles of SS's. But can we really say the Sox have been great drafters over the long run? And obviously, our inability to draft and develop pitchers is like a hallmark of the franchise.

Like I say I don't think any players quit on purpose. But it could be the psychological thing of having nothing left to play for except your own numbers. I'm only guessing.

To think that Senga signed for less money when we so badly needed starting pitching. To think that Bloom instead focused so much effort and money on a DH. It just confirms that his judgment was terrible.

Gloves, this roster is in such bad shape that the plan for 2024 should either be: 1) Spend like a smarter and luckier version of Steve Cohen. Or 2) Punt again.

I don't think any players consciously quit, because for one thing, they care about their numbers. But it's crazy how pitiful the offense has been in September.

FWIW Cora sounds like he's very focused on managing next year, the last year of his contract.

Well, you get paid for 5 and have a year off to make other plans, so it's not all bad.

My hunch is they're going to hire someone from outside. I don't think Henry is any more enthralled by the idea of Same Old Same Old than you are after watching this wreck of a season.

Turner is having a brutal finish too. As for Yoshida, I think signing a DH for 5 years and 90 (+15) mill is especially questionable when the first of those years has to be treated as an "adjustment year"...

That's not out of the question. Maybe they would rather keep him, because of the paucity of hitters available.

Rick Porcello must be one of the all-time leaders in disparity between fWAR and bWAR. In his final short season of 2020 with the Mets he had a terrible bWAR and a very good fWAR. And he never got an offer in 2021, which was a little strange, I thought. Maybe he wasn't that interested himself, I don't know.

I assume you've read my comments on the contract. Unfortunately, to me it looks like the scouts who said it was a major overpay were right. I'm pretty sure Bloom projected a higher OBP and SLG than we're getting for the money. It's possible a lot of the falloff came from fatigue and he'll do better next year. We have to hope so.
