I agree with that. At the same time I'll always be mystified why Bloom never signed a starting pitcher for more than $10 mill, and I'll always wonder how much of it had to do with budget restrictions imposed on him.
The Braves and Dodgers lost to teams in their own division that were 14 games worse and 16 games worse in the regular season.
Rob Manfred loves him some crapshoot.
Kimbrel's career regular season numbers in non-save situations:
W-L 38-26
ERA 2.79
WHIP 1.15
OPSa .603
Excellent numbers, but yes, his numbers in save situations are markedly better:
ERA 2.18
WHIP .90
OPSa .496
Of course you can. Did the guy who replaced Click in Houston get to pick a new manager? Of course he didn't. This is just one of those old maxims that gets spouted because it sounds smart.
The 2023 payroll budgeting stunk IMHO. 2023 was a year that should live in Red Sox infamy. Total fiasco. Henry was miserly and Bloom didn't get great value for what he did spend, in spite of a few good choices, and lost his job.
The really interesting part of the story is that Dusty Baker put the kibosh on a trade Click had in place at last year's deadline, of Urquidy for Willson Contreras, and Click then pivoted to acquiring Vaz from us. Interesting in light of all the stuff about Cora's power with the Sox.
I guess it's somewhat interesting that the Astros went through all that internal turmoil last year, including disputes between the CBO and the manager, and ended up winning the WS.
Maybe internal turmoil doesn't necessarily kill the baseball team...
And there will be derisive laughter when they do announce him. Not because he's a bad candidate but because they got turned down by so many, it'll look like the whole process was a joke and they ended up having to settle for him.
Yes, he could. But his trend at the plate, including before we signed him, is not encouraging. And small sample or not, 55 K's and 9 BB's is ridiculous.
