  1. It's kind of like choosing between being executed by a firing squad, or by lethal injection.
  2. Just to be clear, $225 for Moto will also mean a $35 million posting fee, and he's reportedly being offered 2 opt outs.
  3. The 2023 team did stay in the hunt for a playoff spot until the deadline, and if Bloom had done something to help, they might have stayed in the hunt.
  4. Probably getting close though - 220 mill, + a 33 mill posting fee, + 2 opt outs, is an enormously risky contract to hand out.
  5. If they sign or trade for 2 good starting pitchers, that alone gives the 2024 team a realistic shot at the playoffs. Meanwhile Brez can work on improving the pitching at the organizational level.
  6. The Red Sox roster needs improvements, but not to be rebuilt.
  7. It seems to have become a trend.
  8. Most of us were fat and happy that offseason, though, and little suspecting the horrors to come.
  9. The term "rebuilding" really gets abused.
  10. This off-season is putting even Talksox to sleep.
  11. The team that signs him is really gonna have to Ben Dover.
  12. You really do you have an aversion to paying free agent starting pitchers significant money. Bloom had the same, it seems.
  13. That does have a decent chance of happening.
  14. Pretty good. You only had to go back half a century.
  15. You throw money at Montgomery because he has posted good numbers over 3 full seasons. He has proven he can do it, whereas Houck has not and has frankly gotten worse.
  16. With starters I don't think there has been much success...like, ever.
  17. And what is our track record for obtaining good pitchers that way?
  18. Yes, we've discussed that quite a bit here...
  19. He'll get signed again this year. Probably for something like Maeda got. Why wouldn't he be just as appealing an option as Maeda?
  20. I'm all for a good trade. But let's say they trade for Burnes. He's only got one year left on his contract, so you'd probably have to overpay him to get him to sign an extension. And of course to trade for a good pitcher who has years of control left, you have to part with serious prospect capital. There are no cheap ways to get good pitchers.
  21. OTOH the last two teams that signed him got good value for their money.
  22. And if we pass on all the overpays, you'll be looking at the same rotation as last year's.
  23. FanGraphs says he was worth $33.2 million over the last 2 years?
  24. Pretty boring so far, but there have to be some fireworks coming soon.
  25. For the most part the Japanese starters have done quite well in MLB, with the exceptions of Irabu and Igawa. As I've said I think Dice-K's arm was destroyed by abuse, or he might have had a much better MLB career.
