For the most part the Japanese starters have done quite well in MLB, with the exceptions of Irabu and Igawa. As I've said I think Dice-K's arm was destroyed by abuse, or he might have had a much better MLB career.

Sale, Crawford and Pivetta all mustered about 2 fWAR last year, which makes you a "number 3" by definition. Add in Bello and we had 4 "number 3"'s, unfortunately, we had no better.

Ohtani has been fairly proficient when not being sidetracked by surgeries. Kuroda was also very good, especially considering the advanced age at which he migrated.

If they get Moto it'll demonstrate that the owners still have the financial will to go for it. Then most of the rest will be up to Breslow.

I don't think anyone is actually going to be terribly surprised or upset if they keep Verdugo. That's just something for us to jabber about, compared to the matter of the SPs.

But it's a monster if. The fact this is his second TJ in 5 years is not something any actuary would laugh off.

Rotation blows unless they make 2 impactful adds, it's pretty simple. If they can somehow outbid the field for Moto they can figure out the rest of it easily enough, I'd say.

That's a pretty safe statement IMHO. The guy is a mega-talent but as we have seen, even mega-talents have bodies that can abruptly break down. Ohtani is guaranteed to be a heckuva DH and that's basically it.

He performed his Mr. Dithers act over and over. Even in '21 we were underwhelmed by the deadline moves, but Schwarber worked out well obviously.

Even that can be disputed. His injury-plagued finish knocked his fWAR down to 1.2 and a value of $9.6 million for a cost of $15 million. Turns out to be a dubious strategy to throw such a pile of money at guys who can't field or run.

Maybe, just maybe, when you're the 3rd richest team in the game but you've had 6 disastrous seasons in the last 12, there's a whole passel o' problems to choose from.

Maybe Chaim is really s***** at math, and that's why they spent too much in '22 and too little in '23.

We could also attribute some of it to allocating $33 million of AAV to DH's - Yoshida and Turner. Just horrible decision-making all around.

There wasn't a lot left for Mr. Dithers, that's for sure. Supposedly Eovaldi came back looking for the Sox original offer and Bloom said the budget didn't have room any more. That seems like a fairly nasty blunder in itself. A team with a desperate need for starters can't afford $17 million for Eovaldi? Jeezus, nice budgeting and planning to not allow for the chance Eovaldi could still be had.
