  1. And in case Sean didn't notice, the Red Sox haven't exactly been flush with starting pitchers who can throw 180 innings the last few years, let alone have a good ERA in the process.
  2. If you combine the 2023 regular season and postseason, Monty pitched 219.2 innings with a 3.15 ERA. Whaddya want, Sean?
  3. I've been wrong about plenty of things. I'd like to have a discussion with McAdam about what he bases his opinion of Montgomery on. Because the stats all say he's a solid #2. And his performance in helping the Rangers win the ring indicated the same thing. So I'd ask Sean exactly what he's got? the same as I would anyone.
  4. There is some correlation, but the correlation has gotten smaller and smaller all the time, to the point it's almost gone.
  5. We like things bigger in Canada, whether it's taxes, football fields or words.
  6. Yeah, that was considered the sort of big breakthrough for ignoring the W-L record... Sonny Gray finished 2nd in the voting this year with his lofty total of 8, count 'em 8 wins.
  7. denny galehouse has joined the conversation with his own viewpoint, which partially agrees with mine and partially doesn't. 5 gloves has also joined. Like I say, it's not all about you. You have to get past that.
  8. ERod was a human rabbit's paw when he pitched for the Sox too, as I recall.
  9. I guess I better clear something up then, Red: I don't post this stuff just for you. We're all here to share and share alike.
  10. If deGrom winning back to back CYA's with a combined record of 21-17 doesn't clinch the point, nothing will.
  11. Yes, deGrom is an excellent pitcher, one of the best in the game. He's also 35 years old. So he may get to 100 career wins, but not much farther.
  12. On another topic, if someone had told you 10 years ago that the brain trust of the 2024 Red Sox would consist of Craig Breslow, Alex Cora and Andrew Bailey, you would have had a good laugh about it.
  13. But you don't have any numbers to back you up, other than the obsolete one of W-L record. I still have some old school in me. ERA can still impress me. But W-L record has been buried. deGrom won back to back Cy's. His average W-L record for those 2 seasons? 10.5-8.5. Dead and buried.
  14. Gray BTW threw 184 innings this year with a 2.79 ERA, but his W-L record was a somewhat silly-looking 8-8. The W-L record is dead as a useful number.
  15. What do Monty and Gray have in common? They both pitched better after leaving the Yankees. Gray said they wanted him to throw too many sliders. Seems he was right and they were wrong.
  16. Knowledgeable Yankee fans will tell you that trading Montgomery for Bader was just one more horrible move by Cashman. Knowledgeable Yankee fans can't believe Cashman is still around.
  17. Nola was 32-31 over the last 3 years and DD paid him 172 million. And DD is not some stat-nerdy type, but he knows W-L record doesn't mean much anymore.
  18. When it comes to something like a pitcher's performance, I'll take the numbers over anyone's opinion. Especially when we're looking at a 3-4 year sample now.
  19. Montgomery was T9 in bWAR for pitchers in 2023 with 4.1. 13 in fWAR.
  20. If Sean McAdam was here I'd tell him too. This is about simple numbers. About facts and not opinions.
  21. He was #13 in MLB this year in fWAR, so the real argument is whether he's a #1. Of course the whole numbering thing is pretty silly anyway.
  22. Anyone who suggests he's not a solid #2 has no clue what they're talking about.
  23. He has averaged 3.4 fWAR the last 3 seasons. Average is 2.0, so a #3 would be about 2.0. He's clearly been a solid #2.
  24. Of course not. Just stick with the fWAR rankings.
  25. Looks like CBS projects him to get more money than E-Rod. Not sure how their order works.
