  1. Clevinger has a bit of a "bad vibe" discount factor being applied, it seems...
  2. I do cherish the titles, I really do. But to me there's no sugar-coating that since 2012 it's been a weird trip and all too often a real bummer trip.
  3. Here's one way to look at things that makes no reference to placing or divisions: Over the 12-year period 2012-2023 the Red Sox finished under .500 6 times (50%). Over the 46-year period 1966-2011 the Red Sox finished under .500 6 times (13%).
  4. In this case I don't think it's a question of who has more money. Moto won't get more than $300 mill no matter what, and the Red Sox have the money. In this case I think it's a question of which one has more tolerance for risk. And who knows, maybe Moto will just decide where he'd like to play, at least until that first opt-out kicks in...
  5. It's kind of like choosing between being executed by a firing squad, or by lethal injection.
  6. Just to be clear, $225 for Moto will also mean a $35 million posting fee, and he's reportedly being offered 2 opt outs.
  7. The 2023 team did stay in the hunt for a playoff spot until the deadline, and if Bloom had done something to help, they might have stayed in the hunt.
  8. Probably getting close though - 220 mill, + a 33 mill posting fee, + 2 opt outs, is an enormously risky contract to hand out.
  9. If they sign or trade for 2 good starting pitchers, that alone gives the 2024 team a realistic shot at the playoffs. Meanwhile Brez can work on improving the pitching at the organizational level.
  10. The Red Sox roster needs improvements, but not to be rebuilt.
  11. It seems to have become a trend.
  12. Most of us were fat and happy that offseason, though, and little suspecting the horrors to come.
  13. The term "rebuilding" really gets abused.
  14. This off-season is putting even Talksox to sleep.
  15. The team that signs him is really gonna have to Ben Dover.
  16. You really do you have an aversion to paying free agent starting pitchers significant money. Bloom had the same, it seems.
  17. That does have a decent chance of happening.
  18. Pretty good. You only had to go back half a century.
  19. You throw money at Montgomery because he has posted good numbers over 3 full seasons. He has proven he can do it, whereas Houck has not and has frankly gotten worse.
  20. With starters I don't think there has been much success...like, ever.
  21. And what is our track record for obtaining good pitchers that way?
  22. Yes, we've discussed that quite a bit here...
  23. He'll get signed again this year. Probably for something like Maeda got. Why wouldn't he be just as appealing an option as Maeda?
  24. I'm all for a good trade. But let's say they trade for Burnes. He's only got one year left on his contract, so you'd probably have to overpay him to get him to sign an extension. And of course to trade for a good pitcher who has years of control left, you have to part with serious prospect capital. There are no cheap ways to get good pitchers.
  25. OTOH the last two teams that signed him got good value for their money.
