  1. If the Red Sox big plan for this offseason was to go all in on Moto, it might be a pretty dumb plan. Let's say there are 5 big spenders in on Moto. I can't see anything that would give us an edge over any of the other spenders. Even if we the same shot as the other 4 teams, that would give us a 20% chance of success. That's really "hope as a strategy".
  2. There are some folks speculating that signing Ohtani doesn't put the Dodgers out of the Moto bidding, that it might actually improve their chances. And Ohtani is apparently deferring most of his money so that the Dodgers have more cash to play with right now for more upgrades.
  3. And Steve Cohen is probably thinking right about now that he can use the $700M he didn't spend on Ohtani to sign Moto, Snell and more.
  4. I saw a quote, can't find it again, but someone in the Red Sox organization commented that the transition from Bloom to Breslow has been so smooth that it's like nothing has changed at all. It seemed to be intended to sound like a good thing.
  5. One thing is past obvious now, some owners simply don't care about the luxury tax and penalties, they're willing to blow through every limit years in a row. If JH still thinks being smart means ducking the tax, his thinking has become obsolete. He's behind the times.
  6. Listen, Bloom could sign 70 starting pitchers with that money.
  7. All sounds good in theory, and everybody has one. The one thing we would all agree on is that we need 10-12 more wins from somewhere. As for the Rangers' huge improvement, it happens, of course, but the probabilities of it occurring are not high.
  8. Well, we need a #1 starter and a #2 starter, IMO. There aren't that many available. Supply is low and demand is high. I'm not sure how any of this is a good thing.
  9. Looks like he had 4 trips to the IL in 2022, and 2 in 2023, one of them 2.5 months. That's a lot of trips in 2 seasons.
  10. Well, we need somebody.
  11. Gray has always been a very good pitcher, though, aside from his stint with the Yanks. A career 3.47 ERA in 1571 innings is pretty good. Both Gray and ERod signed reasonable deals. I wonder if we'll look back in regret like we have about so much the last few years.
  12. It's minor in the sense of financial commitment.
  13. And there are only a handful of meaningful targets for the Red Sox. I don't expect everyone to share my pessimism.
  14. O'Neill has had an extraordinary amount of difficulty staying on the field for long the past two seasons, with injuries to just about every part of his body.
  15. Sure, just like Nomar's SI cover only indicated he was in shape.
  16. I'm not upset about O'Neil. It's a minor move in the big picture. I'm just generally frustrated with the state of the Sox and not feeling very confident that this offseason is going to turn out well for us.
  17. No idea about Duran, but he definitely looked much more jacked in 2023, so maybe he is. I'm feeling cynical enough not to dismiss it.
  18. When a ballplayer looks like a bodybuilder, veins popping and the whole deal, it definitely raises concerns. Plus Randy is right that roiders tend to become very injury-prone.
  19. A picture says a thousand words.
  20. Well, it is kind of funny that they traded Verdugo and then traded for this guy, who had the same kind of issues with his manager as Dugo did, plus does look a lot like a roider.
  21. The teams that lose out in the Moto bidding will likely turn their attention to Snell. Then Montgomery. This may not have been the best offseason to be desperate for an elite starter. The Sox brain trust probably should have given that some thought before this.
  22. You can't help thinking that when Cohen met with Moto one of the things he said was something like this: "Whatever offer you get from another team, bring it to me and I'll beat it."
  23. If they don't land a premier starting pitcher or two, this offseason is going to be another resounding failure, no matter what else they do. I'm sure Brez wants badly to get us that SP or two. I've expressed my doubts that they will land Moto, because it looks like the only way to do so is to be the craziest guy in the room, which isn't really Henry's style.
  24. The picture of him moon posted is very suspicious, very suspicious indeed. Only good thing is we're only expected to be paying him $5.5 mill or something like that, so he's disposable, like a used syringe.
  25. Nice second post, Jim!
