    Yeah, taking on $17 mill was way too much. If you have to pay that much it's just not worth it. Especially if you're the Boston Red Sox and one of the wealthiest teams in the game.

    The past doesn't necessarily predict the future. The fact that Roman Anthony has struggled with injuries in 2025 and 2026 doesn't mean he will do so in 2027 and 2028. Also, the big difference about Sale at the end of 2023 is that you only have one more year to pay him. As it turned out they paid him $17 million anyway. (I guess we're not quite done with this. 🙂)

    Yeah, he repeats himself a bit but it's a well reasoned take.

    The last point I want to make about Sale is this. In spite of all the injuries, at the end of the 2023 season he seemed to be healthy. And Atlanta would not have gone through with the trade and subsequent extension if they hadn't examined him and found him to be healthy.

    In principle, equal projections can only seem more likely to a biased observer. They should have signed Giolito and kept Sale and that would have improved the projections for the rotation. Anyway, we should stop talking about that trade altogether. Don't bring it up again! 🙂

    The Sale trade may have made sense in isolation. But if you look at it in the context of that offseason, Breslow failed. Because we were all screaming for big upgrades in the starting pitching. By trading Sale and signing Giolito Breslow essentially did nothing. I looked at the pre-season projections for Sale and Giolito and they were virtually identical, about 2.5 WAR.

    But as it turns out it was a fantastic buy-low deal for Atlanta.

    Anthony is 22. Way, way too early to be bailing on him.

    Grissom was a prospect. Sale is a Hall of Fame level talent. I realize no one ever changes their positions on these things.

    Yeah, I still think that was a horrible trade even while admitting that Sale's rebound has exceeded all expectations. It was a horrible trade because all the Sox got in return was 10 million and Vaughn Grissom. Basically they had nothing to lose by keeping him.

    You're kind of making it sound like Gray was getting ragged on this year by the fans. I would think most Sox fans loved him this year.

    Mookie finished the season strong and ended up with a 3.9 bWAR in 123 games. If the Dodgers win it again and Mookie has a good postseason the talk will definitely return...

    Sure, but that's the kind of perspective we can only have when the game is over. The manager is in effect let off the hook because they were going to lose anyway.

    Sure seems that way now. But I think going into the series most of us thought they had a shot if things broke their way. Quite the opposite happened of course.

    Also embarrassing is 73 runs in the last 26 games. This was a team that could put up a ton of zeroes on both sides of the board.

    I dunno, they had the third best record in an admittedly lousy league. Third best record should give you a shot at the pennant.

    The questionable bullpen moves are one thing, but the team's pitiful offense is a much bigger concern, I think. The Sox scored 73 runs in their final 26 games.

    Everybody liked Tracy for a long time. Then he gets a 3 year extension. Then he screws up. For some reason it feels like a very Red Sox sequence of events.

    We're all allowed to be as optimistic or pessimistic as we please. It has no impact on the team's performance either way. 🙂

    A season that started as a fuster, had a huge bright spot in the middle, ended as a fuster.
