  1. Yeah, I mentioned those 3 in my point #3.
  2. I'm holding our ownership partly, maybe even 50%, to blame, for our failure this year We have more money than the teams I mentioned but we're not really using it a weapon the past few years. It's easy to say, but if they had given Craig a larger budget maybe he would have done something like sign Imanaga, which would have made a big difference.
  3. Definitely a mixed bag in Craig's first year. 1. Love the moves to acquire pitching prospects. 2. Hate the lack of moves to bolster the 2024 rotation. 3. Sale/Grissom/Giolito/Paxton/Garcia/Sims make me a little nervous the guy has worse luck than Joe Btfsplk. 4. If the Sox miss the playoffs this year, I'm afraid Craig gets a failing grade for 2024. There's no excuse for not being able to beat out teams like the Royals and the Twins.
  4. Where did this come from, other than inside the writer's head? I see nary a quote in it. Edit: I think what probably happened here is that the guy who wrote the story didn't write the headline. A clickbait headline was chosen by the publisher.
  5. I believe Giolito was 2 years guaranteed for the player, with an opt-out after one year.
  6. They were 2 separate transactions. Boston recovered $10 million in the Sale trade. If you want to apply that to the Giolito signing that's fine, but that's kind of an arbitrary thing. Breslow was handed a budget and he had to make his moves fit into that budget somehow. Edit: do you have a link to the story about the Braves initially being willing to take on the whole $27 million while not giving up Grissom? I never heard about that. If it's true, that would mean they in effect allocated $17 million of the 2024 payroll number to Grissom.
  7. If multi includes two it would be Giolito. If not it would be Eovaldi.
  8. It's been a crazy 2 games so far. Starting pitchers all abused. Dodgers have prevailed in both. That 1-2-3 of the Dodgers is one hell of a gauntlet to get through.
  9. He might. It's almost as if he likes to keep us guessing. He did authorize extensions for Cora, Bello and Rafaela, and they offered one to Casas as well.
  10. I may look at things differently than some people do. I always try to keep in mind that there's not a freaking thing I can do about how players perform or their health or what management does with them. I never really gave up on Sale rebounding at some point, but obviously the string of injuries was discouraging. One thing I have tried to emphasize is that I didn't start to get really pissed off about this trade until I realized that the only addition was Giolito. That's when I started thinking this trade had a lot to do with the $10 million they "saved", and that our management was once again neglecting the rotation to an inexplicable and infuriating degree.
  11. When you think about it, trading away lefty starters has always backfired on the Sox, but they keep doing it anyway. Bill Lee John Tudor Bob Ojeda Jamie Moyer Chris Sale We're a franchise that doesn't learn well from its mistakes.
  12. Here's another way to look at it. In 2023, in spite of his injury issues, Sale was one of our best starters. He was #4 in IP, only 3.1 IP behind #3 Houck. He was #1 in FIP, #2 in WHIP, #1 in K/BB. #2 in fWAR, #4 in bWAR. Even in an injury-shortened season, he was one of the best we had. If you want to say that's only because our rotation wasn't very good, well, that's part of the point.
  13. Don't you see the logic problem here? You're saying Sale made more sense for Atlanta because they had much more starting pitching depth than us. Our lack of starting pitching depth is the whole freakin' reason we shouldn't have done it.
  14. The Sox didn't have to "foresee" anything. Nobody can "foresee" anything, especially when it comes to the health and performance of baseball pitchers. "Nobody could have seen this coming" is a classic straw man argument.
  15. So what are you saying, Atlanta made this trade just for funsies, basically? Sale was healthy at the end of 2023, that's the big thing. And past injuries are not necessarily predictive of future injuries. I think that's actually a medical fact.
  16. It's a fair question, but any answer that anyone gives now is naturally biased by hindsight, by the knowledge that Price didn't have much left. One thing I will always remember is that Kimmi didn't like them trading Price. And no one was more against mega contracts than Kimmi. But she thought it made no sense at the time to move starting pitching. My guess is that Kimmi didn't like the Sale-Grissom trade either, for the same reason. Kimmi come back!
  17. I don't think any of us actually disagree with you on this.
  18. I don't think anyone is saying it isn't stupid. We're just trying to think like the Sox owners and brain trust are thinking. That probably does make us stupid, admittedly.
  19. I think the premise is that the Fab Four will really be ready in 2026. Then the team will be in window and will be compelled to improve the pitching.
  20. Amen, brother. I've never understood complaints about wins. All wins are good. The only "downer" wins are the ones when players get injured.
  21. Personally I don't think this trade can be chalked up to bad luck. When a team desperately in need of starting pitching trades a starting pitcher, even an injury-prone one, it's a move that's open to question. Breslow knew there was a reasonable chance Sale would have a decent 2024 (no one in their right mind could have foreseen just how good Sale's 2024 would be). If there was no chance, why in the heck would Atlanta want him? Why would they work out a deal with him giving them 3 years control over him? The Grissom part is bad luck, so far at least. But the Sale part was not bad luck. It was a questionable decision that blew up.
  22. Good call. Price was on a Hall of Fame track until crashing to a halt after joining us.
  23. I'm sure they can compete again next year just like they're doing this year.
  24. Sam Kennedy is already working on how to tell us they need to kick the can down the road just one more time.
  25. Way more in fact. We're blowing everyone away.
