It would be very nice to see him go deep today. Rogers Centre is a good place for him to do it. As we saw with Punto going upper deck.

There's another part to that Lee-Sprowl story. The team enlisted Yaz to go to Zimmer and plead with him to start Lee instead of Sprowl. Zimmer pulled a bunch of clippings out of his desk with stories about Lee calling him a gerbil, and refused to change his mind. I think Zimmer was also quoted as saying 'the kid's got ice water in his veins' about Sprowl.

22 games .314/.444/.543 “God-dang,’’ manager Bobby Valentine said. “He just hits the ball where they weren’t and hit it hard and worked the count. He looks like as good a hitter as you want. Every at-bat he takes pitches that are balls and takes full swings at pitches that are strikes. That’s a good combination.’’ Valentine said Nava has the ability to recognize the location of pitches quickly and decide whether to swing. That enables him to go deep into counts and take confident swings. He saw 22 pitches on Friday. “Am I surprised? I’m absolutely amazed,’’ Valentine said.

Some interesting posts here on pitching and innings-per-start stats. Maybe we should have a separate thread on pitching. I always go to the stats of my 2 favorite teams in history-the 2004 and 2007 Red Sox. The 2004 team had 443 innings pitched by the bullpen and the 2007 team had 447 innings. I think the 'gold standard' for innings per start now is 7. Anybody who can consistently do that like Verlander and Sabathia is a certified horse. To get to 200 innings in 32 starts you only have to average a little over 6 innings per start. I think any starter that can get you 6.5 innings per start or more is doing exceptionally well. As another poster said it's a different game now and it's more difficult for starters to be effective deep into games for various reasons.

Atchison with the GAUDY 0.89 ERA.
  6. Bellhorn04
Really. Can't wait to see his updated stats after this game. It might be a while before he's pumping gas after all.

Poor Punto...it must be depressing seeing a buck ten next to your name. He's normally a .240 hitter.

    Valentine wins that one.

It would take Pedroia 20 games to reach 0.98 WAR.
  11. Bellhorn04
Yeah, good point. He's been forced into some of this by the situation but there is some real gambling going on.

Anybody got any thoughts about Valentine leaning a wee bit too hard on Aceves' rubber arm? That's 4 days in a row. You don't see that much anymore. I checked his game logs from last year and he did pitch 4 in a row once, but it was Sept 25-28.

Tuesday unfortunately? Tuesday would be awesome.

Nava continues to do a commendable job. Out of 20 games there have only been 2 that he hasn't reached base by hit or walk at least once, and in one of those games he had a sac fly.

Excellent news. Seems like the Rays ran into the Pale Hose at exactly the wrong time.
  16. Bellhorn04
Let's wipe the smyly off his face.
  17. Bellhorn04
Now if the Yankees would only lose it would be a sweet night in the ballyards.
  18. Bellhorn04
    Keep doin' it man.
  19. Bellhorn04
And we're 3.5 games out of first. Funny old game ain't it?

My comparison there is mainly on whether Gonzo's contract, when he signed it, was fair or not.
  21. Bellhorn04
And Gonzo's in Boston is only what, .908.
  22. Bellhorn04
Teixeira always ends up with solid HR/RBI numbers, but he's incredibly streaky. If we had signed him he would have caught his share of abuse here, that's for sure.
  23. Bellhorn04
Their starting pitching could be their downfall.
  24. Bellhorn04
O's and Rays both lose. The AL East really could be a 5-team race this year.
  25. Bellhorn04
Teixeira's deal set the bar for Gonzo. He took a little less than Teixeira. I think when Gonzo signed that deal most Sox fans were satisfied that it was a fair deal.
