  1. Ortiz will be an interesting case. I'd like to see him back. But in some respects re-signing him might not be the smart move.
  2. Last 20 games for Beltre: 418/447/949 10 HR 23 RBI You don't see a .949 slugging pct. for 20 games too often.
  3. Lackey won't be gone. Trading him now would make little sense.
  4. Beltre has been insane lately.
  5. I find the way Papelbon is talked about by some fans kind of symptomatic of the way Red Sox fans treat some of their best performers. Papelbon is easily the best closer the Red Sox have ever had, or since Dick Radatz I guess. But even though he's been one of the best at his position in team history, he still takes a lot of abuse. Nobody talks about the 25 straight scoreless postseason innings anymore, but they sure talk about the blown saves in 2009 and last September. Ortiz is another example. For the last few years a lot of people have been itching to send him on his way.
  6. I'm not terribly upset that Paps is gone, but mid-tier? I have to object to that. He's 31 of 35 in saves, which is bang on his career average. His WHIP is almost identical to his career average. His K/BB is a little better than his career average. And as always for the last 6 years, he's been perfectly healthy. Who exactly, besides Rivera, are you rating above Papelbon, and by what statistical measures?
  7. You're right. BV is the only story left this year and the Boston media is now focussed on him 24-7.
  8. It seems strange hearing this kind of hyperbole about a player who is muddling along with a line of 262/306/362 and 2 HR in 56 games. Perhaps the injury has contributed to the struggles, but perhaps that's not such a good thing either.
  9. But you haven't explained why it was foolish to hire him.
  10. Wow. They are really taking this sucking thing seriously. They've already got Valentine fired but that's not slowing them down in the least. Top 5 draft pick here we come.
  11. Halifax is great. There are a lot of Sox fans here. I was in Moncton, New Brunswick last weekend to see Springsteen, and there were a lot of people wearing Sox hats.
  12. They should have paid Valentine a healthy bonus to agree not to write any books for a few years after the end of his tenure.
  13. I try to enjoy these things more quietly than some people.
  14. Who knows what Farrell is thinking. Returning to the Sox might be tempting to him. More money, a bigger payroll, maybe a more realistic shot at a ring within a few years. Or maybe he wants no part of it.
  15. I'm starting to feel a bit sorry for the guy. Red Sox managers always to seem to go out ugly.
  16. I don't think the Yankees have ever blown a lead of any significance in the regular season.
  17. Yeah, it'd be kind of nice if somebody could ask Henry for specifics of what he meant by that. The only thing I can see is that Crawford was not a great OBP guy.
  18. Seems like a smart idea to me.
  19. What I'm suggesting is that some of the smart baseball decisions ahead for this team may involve taking a pass on moves that will make the team better in the short term, in favor of moves that make it better in the long term. Josh Hamilton is an example. Assuming he goes to free agency, he is definitely a player who would make us a better team next year. But he's also a very expensive and risky investment and his contract could end up as another albatross. Will we be able to stay away from big free-agent signings the next few years, especially with all this money freed up?
  20. No argument there. Needless to say this upcoming offseason will be interesting. As I said before I think the team is going to be bad again next year because there's no way to fix it that fast. It'll be tempting to do something like sign Josh Hamilton, but in the long run that's probably a stupid move.
  21. Why is it abhorrent? A major league baseball team is an entertainment entity at least as much as it is a sports entity. The audience's needs and expectations are taken into consideration. Red Sox fans were sending a message that they weren't prepared to be patient. When Epstein uttered the words 'bridge year', the general reaction was 'f*** bridge years, this is the Red Sox and we want to go after another title right now.' I'm not trying to defend any of it. It has been a catastrophe. But I think we need to learn some lessons from it.
  22. But if the FO didn't make any big moves after 2010, if they didn't get Gonzalez and Crawford, if they preached patience instead, do you think the fans were going to buy that? My recollection is that people were generally unhappy and restless and thought we needed to add some big pieces after not winning a playoff game in 2 years.
  23. Personally I think the 'philosophical change' had a lot to do with a loss of patience and probably a perceived lack of patience on the part of the fanbase. After we got swept out in 2009 Sox fans were not a happy group. We won it all in 2007, which was great, but then we lost to the Rays in 2008 in a series everybody felt we should have won. Then 3 and out in 2009. It seemed like we were going downhill fast. Add to that the fact that the farm system had suddenly gone bone dry on MLB-ready players. What do you in that situation? When you're a rich team it's pretty tempting to just reach into the wallet for expensive fixes. You want to keep the fans happy because you want to keep that sellout streak going and keep the money pumping into the tills.
