  1. But this all started with jung's contention that Lester has NEVER been a #1.
  2. Early words on Ortiz are encouraging. He arrived in camp today and says he feels 90%. Peter Abraham says Ortiz seems to be moving around well.
  3. Some of Lester's other comments from that interview with Rob Bradford are more encouraging with regard to his attitude. "It took me a couple of weeks to filter through everything. I think you could really throw any and every one of those words into my offseason and into spring training and into my season. I've never been on this side. I've never had to prove myself. I'm using that as motivation and go out and prove to myself I am who I am. I think you could really honestly put any one of those words: driven, motivated, pissed off, ready to go, whatever you want -- in front of my name and that will describe how I'm feeling. I'm ready to get the season going and go back out there and prove those first four or five years of my career weren't flukes."
  4. I'd say that for the years 2008-2011 Lester was a 'near-ace' though I would agree he was never a true 'ace' as people seem to define that term. For an AL East pitcher to put up 4 consecutive seasons of around 200 innings a year and to never have an ERA above 3.47 is outstanding. Very few teams in baseball had a '#2 starter' over that period who was better than Lester. As for the shut up and pitch part, yes I agree.
  5. Maybe because it's sexy. :dunno:
  6. Pollyanna response: 'Well, at least it wasn't aimed at his head, and I'm sure he learned a darn good lesson.'
  7. Yes, and Tek's handling of the pitching appears to have been more of a plus than any physical defensive problems were a minus. I can only assume that the Sox think that Salty has improved enough as a handler of pitchers to give him the starting job again this year. Hopefully Ross will catch 40% of the games or so. That will give us lots of data to compare the two and see if Salty is in fact getting better.
  8. Varitek's second full season was at age 28. And it took him a few years to become a good defensive catcher.
  9. It's shaping up as a year of observation and assessment. -Is our starting rotation as brutal as many think it is? -Is Salty as brutal a catcher as many think he is? -How good are our prospects and how close to helping us? -Is Benny a smart guy or a boob?
  10. Pedro's 2000 season is considered by some to be the greatest season by a pitcher in history. His ERA+ was 291, the highest in modern baseball. His ERA was 1.74 when the league average was 4.91. His WHIP was .74. 284 K's, 32 BB's.
  11. You have to mention an Ortiz season in there somewhere. If you go with 2004 you get his incredible postseason as well.
  12. Yeah, I was shocked at how he looks too.
  13. Somebody has to stop this back and forth stuff or it'll go on forever. Let's get back to baseball talk.
  14. Lackey's final 3 outings at Fenway as an Angel, including 1 postseason, were all very good. I'm sure that entered into the assessment of him. July 29/08 9.0 IP 2 ER Oct 1/08 (ALDS) 7.0 IP 2 ER Sept 15/09 7.2 IP 2 ER
  15. Has a Red Sox team ever played good fundamental baseball? I can't even remember.
  16. Ross got 3 years, 26 million, Gomes got 2 years, 10 million. Both overpaid but Ross even moreso, I would say. He feasted on lefties and the Green Monster last year.
  17. This is the shakiest part IMO. As I said we're not just talking about a bad season. It started in September/11 and continued through 2012. It's hard for an average fan like myself to comprehend how some mechanical tweaking is going to return Lester to where he was. Don't get me wrong, I'm hopeful that you're right about this. But I see no reason why we should be confident about this.
  18. Our two major power threats, Ortiz and Naps, have major health concerns. Oh well, that's gonna be our 2013 Sox, watch and hope and pray guys don't fall apart.
  19. I'm not out to get Salty. I'm just shocked and appalled at the meltdown of our pitching in Sept/11 and the 2012 season and searching for explanations. Salty represents one possible explanation. But you're right that the numbers don't just simply point in his direction. If he isn't traded we'll be getting lots more data to analyze this year.
  20. You're right, he'll get a deal from someone.
  21. It is a little weird that Lohse and Bourn have drawn such little interest. They must feel like they got kicked off the party boat where A Sanchez and BJ Upton are living it up.
  22. The ship has sailed for any name starters coming to town before the season starts. They're going to take a look at the five we have in place and 'go from there'.
  23. One of the CERA comparisons for which the sample sizes were too small was Melancon. But I have to show this one anyway, for laughs if nothing else. Melancon with Lavarnway IP 11.1 ERA 1.59 Melancon with Shoppach IP 7.2 ERA 2.35 Melancon with Salty IP 26 ERA 9.35 I'm sure we all remember a few of those Melancon outings where he got bombed. Just to refresh our memories: April 8 0.2 IP 3 ER April 17 0.0 IP 6 ER July 22 0.1 IP 4 ER July 27 1.0 IP 4 ER Aug 31 0.2 IP 4 ER As you can probably guess, Salty was behind the plate for every one of these debacles. Weird.
  24. Underperformance doesn't always correct itself. Sometimes players just decline in a big hurry.
  25. It's unfathomable what has happened to Lester since September/11. We can't just write off last year as an off-year without also considering that in the crucial last month of 2011 he was just as awful as he was last year. In his last 7 months and 237 innings he has a 4.90 ERA. And none of this that we know of can be attributed to injury.
