  1. It's debatable. Who's going to be available next year? Does anybody even know at this point? If what you're saying is correct, they should have moved on Haren or McCarthy.
  2. The Red Sox have done some encouraging things so far this offseason, but not in the area of starting pitching. The offer they made to Dempster is not a good sign at all. If they don't do something better than that, they're going to end up looking like the same old dumbasses in spite of good moves in other areas.
  3. Sure it's an overpay. But will there be a time in the foreseeable future that there won't be an SP shortage, or that you won't have to overpay to acquire a starter? I have my doubts.
  4. Are the Red Sox considering A. Sanchez at all? If you include his postseason numbers last year, he posted a 3.67 ERA in 216 innings. Even better, if you use only his numbers with Detroit, including postseason, he posted a 3.32 ERA in 95 innings. Sanchez's asking price of 15 million is not unreasonable considering what other FA's are getting. The 6 years is obviously a killer. What about 5/80? Why not? Sanchez probably projects as well or better over the next 5 years as anybody we've got.
  5. Those are some remarkable numbers. Man, what a durable group...Doubront and Lackey each over 200 innings! Bill must have created some new projection models.
  6. I can rationalize with the best of them, but if they don't at least add a starting pitcher it will be a travesty. The 2012 starting rotation had the highest ERA in franchise history and we have plenty of payroll room. There's no defence.
  7. The LT threshold is frozen at 189 million for 2014 through 2016, or until the end of the current CBA.
  8. There was a later rumor that Henry was looking to sell part of his interest to another minority shareholder but would remain principal shareholder. That makes a bit more sense to me and may have been the source of the Fox story. If Henry was actively trying to sell the team the story would have spilled out by now...you can't hide something like that from the Boston media.
  9. The Dodgers are not only paying Greinke 25 million a year, but from the looks of it they'll be paying luxury tax of 40 or 50% most of the 6 years, plus the other new penalty. So in effect Greinke might cost them 35-40 million a year.
  10. Josh Beckett is actually a good example of why the numbering system for starters can get a little silly. He's possibly the most erratic starter I've ever seen. He could be a stud hoss #1 and a back-end bum...all in the same season.
  11. They're only going to add one starter.
  12. There are perfectly good reasons why the Red Sox would be looking for short term deals other than the 'prepping to sell' theory. For one thing they just got burned on a bunch of longer term deals. Second they've got prospects a year or two away. Guys like Wilbur love the conspiracy stuff.
  13. Wilbur knows nothing more about any of this than we do. Guessy guessy. It's clear we'll be hearing speculation about Henry selling the team from now until it actually happens. FWIW there's growing speculation about the Steinbrenner boys wanting to sell too. I'll believe it when I see it.
  14. We've already got him - Lackey.
  15. It would be be beyond shocking to me to see the Yankees move Cano. That's just whack.
  16. Too funny. Tommy John, the guy who the surgery is named in honor of, had it when he was 31 and won 164 games after the surgery. I'm guessing history isn't your favorite subject.
  17. Surely they can reassemble ARod into a DH at least.
  18. I don't think the Dodgers are exactly in the 'trading away stud starters' mode right now.
  19. So who the hell are they going to get for the rotation. Seems like it's starting to narrow down to: a) Trade Sanchez c) Dumpster dive
  20. You mean the insurance policy? I read that it would cover 75% of the contract if he was declared physically unable to perform. I don't know how that would affect the payroll for lux tax purposes. Anybody?
  21. Hamilton can seriously jerk the baseball, no question. I remember one he hit at Fenway that went deep into the right field seats and it seemed like a relatively easy swing.
  22. Exactly. I don't care if he's a cyborg, if he gets the job done.
  23. Lighten up man, seriously. Short term deals. Cherington is holding on to our prospects.
  24. Not quite teed up yet? Ben's starting to sound cocky.
