    One of the reasons 2015 will be so interesting, to me, is that Ben and the FO have done some against-the-grain things and really put themselves out there, so to speak. They cut loose Lackey and Lester and assembled a rotation with some very suspect historical numbers. They spent big on adding offense and went well over the tax threshold even with a cut-rate rotation. Very interesting indeed.

    No, certainly not. All I really care about is how analytics help the Red Sox. There have been various forms of advanced analytics in play for quite a while now. I'd like to see some evidence of how we have translated analytics into on-field success, or how other teams have.

    One point on which I agree with 700hitter is that the most important metric by far is your W-L record.

    I've had some very good times at Fenway. My first visit was in 1974. My best visit was in 1986. I saw 6 games against the O's and the Yankees in beautiful summer weather with 4 thirsty buddies. It was as good as it gets. The thing I always loved about Fenway was there would almost always be somebody sitting close to you with a perfect Boston accent who was more than willing to talk Sox with you.

    I think the Sox FO is concerned about how well Hamels will fit in Boston and that's why they're reluctant to pay too much in prospects.

    Sox fans should be expecting the unexpected by now. We've had 4 straight seasons of surprising or shocking final results. 2011 - 5-10 wins worse than expected 2012 - 15-20 wins worse than expected 2013 - 10-15 wins better than expected 2014 - 15-20 wins worse than expected Hopefully the law of averages is on our side this year.

    Agreed about Martinez. 57% of Thomas's AB's were as a DH.

    It's sort of interesting that Shank ties this in with Larry getting old and falling off his motorbike rather than anything to do with his track record.

    Last year was a very good year for getting elite pitchers at the deadline for a reasonable cost (Lester & Price).

    'Hall of Fame' is not exactly clear-cut terminology. The only reason that term was chosen is because it sounds good. So why shouldn't it be the Hall of the Very Good? Whether we like it or not, that's exactly what it is. There are a number of guys in the Hall already who were only very good.

    And now, sir, you've done it. These comparisons of great players are often fundamentally absurd, but we are compelled to do them anyway for some reason. Orr was a defenseman and Gretzky was a center. What about goalies? Maybe Marty Brodeur deserves consideration as the best hockey player. How come the lists of great football players don't include any defenders (kudos to the mention here of Lawrence Taylor)? How do we compare Bill Russell with Michael Jordan? Etc.

    Sounds like your analysis of him came up with much different results from the Sox brain trust's.

    I think it's pretty plausible that a position switch can affect a player's hitting. It's just very hard to measure some of this stuff. sk7326 just commented a few days ago about Lavarnway's hitting suffering when he tried to concentrate more on his defense.

    I hate to admit it, but my favorite football player at one time was a running back who is now better known as a murderer.

    But what if the new Fenway looked almost exactly like the old Fenway? The Yankees did it. Their new stadium looks like the old one except for the porch being even a little closer and all the empty $2,500 seats behind home plate.
