  1. "Projected as front runners" LOL. There are so many ways to say We're Really Really Interested! I don't think people can even fully appreciate just how Interested we are!
  2. Yeah, but that resulted in a 375 million payroll and a 100 million tax bill for 2023, a total of 475 million. I'm gonna have to say that's insane money however you look at it.
  3. No, that level of irrationality would not happen. It never does. But Cohen probably went into this knowing it might get to $750-800 million-which you could argue is plenty irrational-and he was perfectly comfortable with it. He also showed his smarts by bending over backward to show Soto just about anything would be done to get him to sign and Soto would be treated better than a family member LOL
  4. Maybe the spreadsheet guys had some projections that a $700 million investment in a 26 year old superstar had an excellent chance of being recoverable.
  5. Sadly, we have seen the unconscionable for 3 straight seasons, and I'm not comfortable it won't be 4.
  6. It's very, very hard to say with this ownership now. Even though they appeared to be serious about Soto, it's no guarantee at all that they're boosting the payroll. Maybe they were thinking Soto or nothing. They have become enigmatic.
  7. It's very possible if not probable that they're done with the rotation. I kind of keep forgetting about Giolito. Crochet Houck Bello Crawford Giolito Depth: Criswell/Fitts/Priester/Whitlock/whoever If that's the case, they really ought to sign a good reliever or two.
  8. Yeah, if he proves he's healthy we might only have to eat 90% of his salary. Sorry man, I'm in my morning rant mode here.
  9. This is kind of what we've been reduced to. The Yanks made it to the World Series but hey, we can gloat a little about Verdugo. He's out of their hair now.
  10. Not exactly, but he was certainly one of the best moves of the last 5 years.
  11. I wonder if their offer to Burnes is fully prepared yet? 😛
  12. Problem is we were saying stuff just like this the last few years around this time, and not much materialized.
  13. True. But John Henry is starting to resemble Emperor Nero.
  14. Yeah, we have. One little bright spot in this generally gloomy period.
  15. "Just watch the kids play!" - that sounds like music to JH's ears.
  16. It was kind of a troika with those two and the great Rusney Castillo. That was a quick quarter billion down the tubes.
  17. Either of those would signal very serious. Strange how doubtful we still are about that.
  18. It's not a surprise. They had him for one year at a nice price and they knew the price to keep him was going to be substantially more. And he's a pretty limited player and not the most reliable health-wise. It remains to be seen if they make any attempt to replace his RH power.
  19. It would certainly look considerably better. It would confirm that they mean business. We'd still be howling for a bullpen upgrade, mind you.
  20. Granted, but the $1.6 billion hypothetical number is based on moon's hypothetical $1.5 billion bid by the Red Sox LOL The bottom line is Cohen said he wouldn't be outbid by anyone for Soto, including the Yanks, and he wasn't fooling.
  21. Your reading comprehension is brutal. $15 mill is what's been reported as an estimate and I clearly said that's all I was interested in paying. That's the opposite of assuming anything. It's exhausting to have to explain things like this.
  22. I think what you try to do is simplify things too much and in the process you don't seem to give much credit to the other person's intelligence. As I said, we can all read B-R.
  23. For some perspective, they risked 38.5 million on Lucas Giolito coming off 2 months of pitching batting practice. 15 million is about 40% of that.
  24. IF the Sox sign Buehler and all goes mostly well it's a huge plus. Maybe he even agrees to a club option for 2026? You don't get many chances to acquire a starter of his caliber for relatively light financial risk. The problem is these Red Sox seem to be continuing to be tight with the budget, so even $15 million might be more than they're willing to gamble.
  25. No one is trying to minimize it. I think we can all read Baseball-Reference just fine. Like countless other pitchers of this era he's had elbow problems, we get it. I'm only interested if he really and truly is available for $15 mill or so. He's relatively young and has shown elite upside. He looked healthy when last seen throwing a baseball. There are arguments for and against, obviously. In any case it probably won't happen anyway so we're just sparring with other for fun.
