  1. True, Arroyo was not an elite talent. He was mainly a good innings-chomper.
  2. The 6 man rotation idea gets floated a lot, but no MLB teams seem to actually want to try it. Mainly I assume because every 5th day is generally considered optimal for a starter's performance. And the piggyback idea for 2 starters has been proven to not work, I'd say.
  3. Oh yeah. We're done with adding starters.
  4. Just for the sake of having a stance, I'm going to say they commit to him staying in the bullpen.
  5. Here's a 2003 "closer by committee" article by McAdam. Pretty hilarious reading now. https://www.espn.com/mlb/columns/mcadam_sean/1489225.html
  6. Why do you refuse to acknowledge the existence of Brandon Lyon?
  7. Not sure babied is the right term. He threw 73.1 IP which I expect is above average for a reliever these days. His usage was different because he had so many multi-inning appearances, and a lot of them were high-leverage as he evolved into the "relief ace". It worked beautifully that year. It's been a mess ever since. Hopefully they do keep him in the pen and he stays healthy.
  8. I thought they adjusted it every year but I'm not sure about that. It does seem to have been at about $8 million a while.
  9. Examples needed. We were talking about John Lackey yesterday. He threw about 215 innings in 2013 including the postseason.
  10. Some cursory internet research indicates uncertainty over whether surgery would have been the answer for Koufax's severe arthritis.
  11. "Mutual options" are where my brain starts to melt.
  12. And if you look at how it all averages out, it costs about $8 million per 1 WAR.
  13. Team option, that is. Could come into play, you're right. More fun stuff to keep an eye on. 🙂
  14. There are things to be hopeful about. Sasaki isn't one of them.
  15. Breslow said they have no meeting scheduled with Sasaki.
  16. Because the syntax of your sentence made it sound like the 2 decades referred to the years it worked for Boston and St. Louis. But OK, you meant the year the contract was issued and that is indeed 15 years. Still, I've never heard 15 years referred to as nearly 20 years.
  17. Is 2013-2015 nearly two decades ago already? Holy crap does time fly...
  18. I'm not "gah-gah" over Whitlock, but I'm happy we still have him and hopeful for a good 2025 for him. His ability is not in question.
  19. The report is that the Sox offered 7/190 to Fried. So I'd say they're not completely done with big money free agents.
  20. There's always going to be a lot of luck involved in whether a big free agent signing pays off or not. If you get burned once or twice do you keep trying and hope the luck evens out, or do you stop playing? And if you stop playing, what do you do with that money you're not spending on free agents? The Red Sox have gotten burned a few times without a doubt. OTOH expensive free agents have contributed significantly to all 4 of the Red Sox rings. I'll take that tradeoff.
  21. It's not irrelevant to an objective analysis of the contract, because we traded him. It was our decision to forego the remaining value, which turned out to be significant. The bottom line is, Lackey ended up earning that contract, or close to it, depending on which metric you like.
