  1. Miley has had an interesting career.
  2. They were either going to sign Price or trade for a starter, I suppose. Not doing anything about the starting rotation was not an option.
  3. To that list I would add Theo's signing of Foulke. I suppose that was just going for the big name too? Balderdash, I say.
  4. I don't really buy this. If I did buy it, then I would also buy that Ben acquired Bailey, Hanrahan and Melancon because they were 'name closers' at the time.
  5. Agreed. If the Sox are going to give him an extension and the added security, they need to get something in return.
  6. I think he was pretty sure he was getting Price.
  7. Of course it is. But if you're not willing to give out any risky contracts, your team is probably going to suck. And the teams are still making piles of money in spite of the bad contracts, so no one should feel sorry for them.
  8. You really think that's why they traded for Kimbrel?
  9. Let me answer it this way: I think John Henry knows what he's doing. If he thinks it's OK to invest XXX dollars in payroll in 2019 or any particular year, I think he's probably right and that he's basing it on fairly sound baseball and business reasons.
  10. Hembree saw more postseason use than the other 2 so obviously Cora agrees.
  11. Ha, forget it. Too much work and no pay.
  12. It would take some analysis, but I believe there is correlation between the team's on-field results, revenues and increase in franchise market value.
  13. He didn't say anything about affording. He just said it would be a plus.
  14. No argument that the players are the main beneficiaries. However, I think you could certainly argue that the current system has been pretty damn good for the Red Sox franchise.
  15. Shouldn't such an assessment wait until this offseason is done?
  16. I don't think a GM of a big market team like Epstein, Cashman or DD would call it dumb. I think they would call it a necessary evil that has to be used judiciously, but that you will get burned on sometimes regardless. If I'm not mistaken Theo Epstein actually said something pretty close to that when he was here. And he's obviously decided to keep utilizing it for the Cubs.
  17. If the Red Sox come in last place this year, some of it will fall on Dombrowski, yes. The only exception to this, in my opinion, is if the downfall is clearly attributable to multiple injuries to key players such as what happened to us in 2006.
  18. To be fair and complete you need to put up the 2013 projections to see how the results compared.
  19. I like it. DD is doing some diligent dumpster diving this offseason LOL
  20. I disagree, and others do as well, obviously. The results of 2014 and 2015 cost Ben his job.
  21. I don't think $400 mill is in the picture. But we have to see what Machado and Harper get.
  22. You may have a point about Machado. Harper is the guy I'm most skeptical about. His defensive numbers make him look like a future DH.
  23. Sometimes the general manager has to wear it. Ben gets great credit for 2013, as he should, but there were some amazing overperformance by a number of players on that team. In 2014 everything turned around in the other direction. Shane Victorino might be the poster boy for what happened. If Ben gets great credit for 2013 he also has to wear the results of 2014 and 2015. That's how I see it, anyway. When you look at the history of the team since 2002, generally speaking the only years where the team fell vastly short of pre-season expectations were the Cherington years.
  24. But will they be worth their contracts?
