  1. That's 100% correct. But this is the nature of thresholds and marginal tax rates. What is the incremental cost of the next addition?
  2. In the dark part of my mind I can't help thinking there's a panic option built in here somewhere too.
  3. And now he's got Brian Bannister, who seems to be gaining a reputation as quite the pitching guru, to go to work on these reclamation projects.
  4. The question is whether that decline in attendance is offset by the money pumped in by all the stay-at-home fans watching on their team's network, Extra Innings and MLB.TV.
  5. Maybe the success with Brasier convinced them they could turn sow's ears into silk purses.
  6. As it turns out, per Jacko's new thread on the payroll, the Cot's number is about 3.5 million low...not all the blocks are filled in.
  7. The head-scratcher is still the Pearce signing. If you're that adamant about staying below the hell threshold, why are you signing a 36-year old platoon bat for 6.25 million plus tax? I'm happy to have Pearce, but it really added to the constraints, you might say.
  8. There's only one explanation I can see. Henry and Dombrowski must have talked at great length about whether Dave could construct an adequate bullpen without spending any money on it, and decided that not only could he do it, but that it would be fun and would make the team look very smart.
  9. No, you're certainly not negative.
  10. Sorry cp. You show more signs of having a life, if you know what I mean. But you are a mainstay of this fine forum too.
  11. Yay owners. We really need another strike. It's been 25 years since the last one.
  12. It's what some do. As you know very well, if our bullpen blows a few games early, there will be pandemonium on the game threads.
  13. Discipline is a very interesting choice of words.
  14. That's what I said too. I think ERA was probably the first real 'stat geek' stat.
  15. I don't know, I think me, you and notin have done a fine job jabbering away the last few months in spite of having no actual baseball news.
  16. Something tells me you have a beef with notin.
  17. Wow, that's some innovative thinking right there.
  18. You must have a low opinion of Eovaldi and Pearce.
  19. You're right. I thought we were a little closer than that to the limit.
  20. Our Pythagorean record was 103-59, so you were pretty close. One should never predict that their team is going to win 108 games in this crazy freakin' game, IMHO.
  21. It's gonna be a war, man.
  22. The question is will they hold on to him when he reaches free agency next year.
  23. ERA is certainly one of the key stats. Now when you think about it, ERA was one of the first 'stat geek' numbers. Some geek decided that pitchers should not be victimized statistically by bad fielders, and that they needed a number that eliminates the runs resulting from errors. Modern geeks have just built on that concept a bit.
  24. So what exactly was the ******** part of what notin said again?
