  1. Cervelli's 2019 salary is actually $11.5 million. And of course there have been rumors of the Pirates trying to trade him. And I do think his relatively high salary and the fact that he's in his final year MIGHT have something to do with it. I think it's a reasonable hypothesis at the least.
  2. Take a look at the sequence of posts with Harmony about a possible trade of Vazquez to the Pirates for a reliever, which was raised by notin and continued by me. Harmony basically scoffs at the idea because of Vazquez being blocked by Cervelli. I tried to point out that the Pirates might be motivated to trade Cervelli because of his cost. Harmony responds that the Pirates don't have the same problems with luxury tax that the Red Sox do. I suggested that if the Pirates don't trade Cervelli this offseason they'll probably trade him at the deadline, because he's in the last year of his contract. Harmony responds that the Red Sox might also trade Bogaerts and Porcello at the deadline for the same reason. It seems that when you disagree with him, Harmony has a habit of taking shots at the Red Sox rather than engaging you on your points. It's a bit childish, in my opinion.
  3. And maybe subtlety. Jacko has none.
  4. Harmony is not nearly as objective as he makes himself out to be.
  5. Don't speak too soon sk. The Yanks projected 2019 payroll for tax purposes is about 220 mill right now, so they will be paying some tax. It looks like they'll be shedding Gray's 7.5 mill out of that. But I won't be shocked it there are more additions to come. They're just going in some different directions than expected.
  6. Some things just can't be explained-the horrible pitching in 2012 seemed to be a carryover from September, 2011. Jon Lester pitched badly from September, 2011 to somewhere in the middle of the 2013 season, and then he reverted to his former excellence. Inexplicable. But such is baseball.
  7. Which has nothing to do with your comments about Pittsburgh having no interest in Vazquez because he'd be blocked by Cervelli. No one is suggesting Vazquez is better than Cervelli, but he has a low price and years of control in his favor.
  8. I don't see how he could have had that much of a negative impact on the pitching.
  9. But it's unlikely they'll be keeping him beyond 2019. If they don't trade him this offseason they'll likely trade him at the deadline, assuming they're not in contention.
  10. But of course they may be able to trade Cervelli (reportedly Dombrowski inquired already) who is relatively expensive and in the final year of his deal.
  11. What were the projections for the 2013 team?
  12. I really hope the bullpen guys don't make up a bunch of 'Who's the closer?' t-shirts.
  13. And we still won 119 games with them. Shows you the whole team doesn't have to be great.
  14. Eovaldi has always been known as a guy with great stuff who couldn't put it all together. Adding a cutter to his repertoire seems to have made an enormous difference. He put up K/BB numbers he had never approached before. His health history is a huge concern, obviously.
  15. The bullpen falls on Dombrowski's shoulders and I am sure he knows that full well. If the team comes out of the gate blowing late leads left and right, he will be forced to make a trade. It will be addressed one way or the other. There's no choice in the matter.
  16. The real miracle in 2013 was the starting rotation. In 2012 the starters put up the worst collective ERA in franchise history. And the only addition was Dempster.
  17. There's always going to be some up and downs. The bottom line is, since Henry bought the team we have the most rings of any team.
  18. I think having Eovaldi and Pearce for a full season should qualify as an enhancement.
  19. Luck is usually part of winning a championship. But winning 4 in 15 years in the modern baseball era, that ain't luck, baby.
  20. What's a little funny about your position, jacks, is that you keep making such a big deal out of us losing Kelly. Kelly did not have a great season last year by any measure. In conventional metrics he had a 4.39 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. In advanced he had a 0.7 fWAR. We've had one significant loss in Kimbrel, and that's it.
  21. You're a maestro of metaphor!
  22. Within a day or two, the wife has sold some of the surplus goodies online, and ordered a new furnace with manageable monthly payments.
  23. What do you think of my new signature line?
  24. Kelly was not great last year - fWAR of 0.7 He was great in the postseason. But so were Barnes and Brasier.
  25. Well, it's still only January, jacks.
