    I think the actual answer is that we now have a lot more off days on the schedule, so there isn't as much need for the 8th reliever. Plus September callups will be here soon.

    My guess is the front office was totally on the fence about our chances and therefore not very committed to making a meaningful acquisition. I suspect Dombrowski made some inquiries about relievers but the asking price in talent was a little more than he was comfortable with. Maybe Dave got a little shy about weakening our already bad farm even further. I'm sure he's not unaware of what is said about him in that regard. And if rumors are accurate he may not even know if he's back next year.

    5.2 innings is not usually a big enough sample, but those are some truly horrific numbers, they were bad enough to get him jettisoned by the Reds obviously. Brewer is with the PawSox. I just can't see this dude as such a slam-dunk that DD is an idiot for not signing him...

    But why not mention that in his last 5.2 innings, he's given up 24 base runners, including 5 home runs?

    Hopefully that make-up game with KC will only take about 20 minutes for us to dispose of them. It was a suspended game, it starts in the top of the 10th.

    This might sound a little pompous, but knowledgeable Sox fans consider Drew a good acquisition in spite of his obvious faults.

    Maybe this year he does. But Chris Sale is vastly better than Clay.

    Yes, I would never suggest the woes of our big 3 can all be attributed to the baseball. It's a combo of numerous factors without a doubt.

    We're 7.5 games behind the Rays and 5.5 behind Oakland. In 2011, the Rays were 8 games back of us on September 6 and overtook us!

    Plus the Yanks have 109 homers in 57 road games and 109 homers in 64 home games, so they're actually hitting more of them on the road.

    That's going to be a tough thing for this front office to do. Because it will send an up-front message to the fans that the 2020 Red Sox are probably not a playoff contender. From a PR perspective, a much more palatable decision would be to keep Mookie and only trade him at the deadline if we're out of it.

    Sometimes the modern fan thinks too much as a GM and not enough as a fan. When we were watching guys like Lynn and Rice and Dewey, we were just enjoying them, we weren't thinking about what we might be able to get back for them.

    The old school numbers for Sale, Price and Porcello are pretty damn awful, no? Sale 6-11 4.40 Price 7-5 4.36 (and only 105.1 innings) Porcello 10-9 5.67 If someone told you before the season those would be their numbers on August 15, you'd probably think we were screwed, right?

    If Eovaldi finishes well, and Sale does the same, at least it will tone down a little the diatribes about how bad their contracts are this offseason.

    Why wouldn't we want Brian Johnson back at $575 K or whatever it is. It's not like we're swimming with good pitchers. Johnson can be serviceable for stretches. He didn't hurt us today.
