    Absolutely true. But when subsequent events make it look bad, it's DD who bears the blame.

    My guess is that DD or someone thought Swihart could be an adequate backup catcher and OPS 100 points higher than Leon.

    Maybe he did exactly what Henry wanted up to winning it all last year-and after that he screwed the pooch.

    Something that is almost forgotten about the early stage dysfunction was the backup catcher controversy. Apparently DD was the one who made the call of starting the season with Swihart instead of Leon. Leon was DFA'd and could have been a goner if any other teams were interested. Then the pitching and Swihart get off to a crappy start and back comes Leon.

    That could certainly be true about the pen. But in the big picture the pen wasn't the real problem, it was the starters. E-Rod was the only one who pitched well and pitched all season. Sale, Price, Porcello, Eovaldi, Cashner, Johnson, Velazquez and whoever we called up from the minors ranged from bad to hurt to horrendous.

    I still say overblown. It's trying to blame everything on the simplest, most convenient reason.

    It's true we can argue forever about whether DD went too far. He probably did go a little too far in what he gave up. But overall, the trades he made were justified ones. Every big trade he made was for pitching. I can't really argue with that approach.

    This is very odd because Bannister has been a big part of the team's pitching brain trust since 2015. It certainly signals some division in the ranks. And probably the departure of LeVangie.

    Well, Dave got us Eovaldi for only 17 million a year for 4 years. In Year One he's given us 62.2 innings and a 6.03 ERA.

    Funny the different reactions people have to Fenway. I know it's uncomfortable and all, but I think it's one of the great properties in the world. It would be cool if they could somehow gut it and rebuild the interior without touching the existing dimensions.

    No question that with Porcello it'll all come down to his price. The thing is, if he's gone, we're going to have to replace him and his 180 innings, likely with another free agent.

    If you just look at his ERA, sure, it's not great. But Porcello has some very good qualities. He takes the ball every fifth day without fail and he puts up a lot of Quality Starts. He's not going to be as easy to replace as you think.

    Things could be a lot worse, actually, I guess. Baseball America just upgraded us to the #22 farm system.

    AFAIK, Gorkys has been playing because Beni's had some minor injury issues. The only other OF options aren't especially great either. I think AC has seen enough of JD in the OF for one year.
