No, it's not a slam dunk. People who make predictions on message boards, with nothing at stake, tend to be very confident in their crystal ball abilities.

It doesn't seem odd to me. -They had no idea at the time what would come out of the Red Sox investigation or how long it would take. But they were reasonably assured Cora was out for one season at least. -They were taking a lot of heat from the media saying that firing him was the right thing to do. -They needed to move on with their plans for 2020. -Maybe they also thought they had nothing to lose, in a sense, because they could re-hire Cora later if he was only gone a year. If they had installed Mike Scioscia or whoever as the new manager, it would be pretty obvious they were totally cutting ties. But the choice of Roenicke seems to really leave the door open.

But here is the entirety of it: "At the time that we parted ways with Alex, we were clear that that was a result of his role and what happened with the Astros and everything the investigation over there revealed," Bloom said. "It had nothing to do with what may or may not have occurred in Boston, and that's still the case. All the reasons we parted ways then are still the case." The meaning of that last sentence in the context of the whole thing is ambiguous, perhaps.

I disagree. In my speculative world, Roenicke goes back to bench coach in 2021.

If you go back to when it happened, everyone seemed to agree it was the only thing that could be done at the time. Same thing happened to Beltran of course, and he wasn't even under threat of discipline. As for now, the media speculation, including Shaughnessy, seems to be that the Red Sox are very open to having to having him back. We're hearing how ownership loves him and the players all love him. Not a single negative thing other than the one-year suspension. All signs seem to be favorable.

Rehiring can be the right thing because he will have done his time, served his one year suspension, just like manager Hinch of the Astros.

So you're going on record that the deciding factor in whether the Red Sox re-hire Cora will be money?

Apples and oranges. Cora's salary is a relative drop in the bucket and doesn't count for luxury tax purposes. The only question is whether they have mutual interest in a reunion.
