The Red Sox have obviously blown a ton of money on underperforming free agents. In spite of that, the net return of investing in free agents has been a large contribution to 4 titles and to a massive growth in the value of the franchise.

Varitek played a key role in us winning two titles. Crawford was a colossal bust for us. I don't think he had the cred to be 'calling out' Varitek for anything.

At this point in time, Raffy does not look like a $30 million player by any means. And they can afford to wait to offer him an extension.

Cot's has the Red Sox as about $68 million under the first tax threshold for 2021. BUT that only includes players who are already under contract for 2021. So it doesn't include E-Rod or Perez or any of the minimum wage guys, for starters. A lot depends on whether they decide to exceed that threshold or not.

I think the Rays are a major threat to win it. I'd make them the #2 favorite after the Dodgers.
