    It's because of projection. The ranking systems they use for present tools pretty much ignores current minor league level, and Jacobs ranks better in every hitting category than Iglesias even though one plays A-ball and one plays AAA ball. What they're trying to say is that, at his best, Iggy will never develop the power and legs Jacobs Jacobs currently has.

    Because why would he take a minimal raise and the same amount of years as his last contract? With the market the way it is, all he has to do is wait it out. Someone will give him at least three years and ten million a year as soon as the options thin out a bit more. Let's be realistic here.

Anyways, from MLBTR: The Red Sox are "kicking around their preference" between trying to sign Hiroki Kuroda or trade for Gio Gonzalez, writes Yahoo's Tim Brown. WEEI's Alex Speier takes an in-depth look at the process of converting relievers to starters, with a focus on the Red Sox. Speier notes that even though the Sox are preparing Daniel Bard to start, it doesn't necessarily mean the right-hander will end up in the rotation.     Per MLBTR: The Red Sox haven't ruled out signing Roy Oswalt, tweets Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, although sources say the right-hander is not a priority for them. Earlier today we heard that interest in Oswalt has spiked significantly since he's been telling teams he's willing to sign for a one-year deal. It seemed inevitable that Yankees would re-sign Andruw Jones earlier this offseason, but Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports the camps have not made much progress and that the outfielder is garnering interest from other teams, including the Red Sox.

    They are, however, not going to just "dump him" for the sake of saving money, which is what Spitball doesn't seem to understand. You dump guys who you have no use for or are blocking a position. Young does neither. If they deal him, they will deal him to improve their ballclub in areas they deem necessary. They are dealing from a position of strength.

    Where have i said that the Red Sox don't have a chance at Young? That is selective reading. In fact, i posted a package i thought would get it done. What i have said is that the package needed is probably going to have to be centered around Coyle and a couple young arms instead of Reddick because from what they've been doing this off-season it would probably be more desirable to the Diamondbacks. What i posted as fact is that, in fact, the D'Backs don't need to use a Chris Young trade as a straight salary dump because he's a 20/20 OF that is cost-controlled. That is the fact, and has nothing to do with the ability the Red Sox have to get the guy.

    It doesn't play the same way as a starter than it does relieving. You have to hold back some pitches and save some velocity for the later innings. I think he'll be above average, but as a starter, i doubt he's as good as you say. We'll see.

    Expecting Aceves to post an ERA under four as a starter is kind of unrealistic though.

    They would be over 40 million under the cap for 2013 in my scenario. That's enough for something, isn't it?

    Jenks is a good pitcher, but he's fat and out of shape. Expect him to be in great shape next year for his contract drive. You can quote me on it. As for Oswalt and Cordero, that's the point. They would put us significantly over the threshold this year. Then they would be FA's along with Jenks, Ortiz, and the others, and the Sox would be massively under the cap. Pay now so you can avoid paying later.

    They can most likely get Oswalt and Cordero on one-year deals. If they can manage that and a platoon partner for Reddick, then they could move one of Bard/Aceves to closer. Also, Jenks will be on a contract year drive, so you can expect something out of him. There's also the trade route. They may end up with Bailey, which would solve a lot of their problems, specially if he can stay healthy.

    But for the moment, the pitch recognition is not there, and until it is, it should affect his ranking accordingly, even though the fact that he's in AAA is a valid argument.

    The thing is, that they can blow the cap this year with a couple of one-year contracts (like Oswalt) then get comfortably enough under the cap for 2013 (with expiring contracts and rookies taking over some positions) to make some other FA moves and stay under the cap.
