    The way the AL is set up right now, no team is good enough to call itself a "super power" because the top is so crowded. "Super power" entails being far and away superior to the rest of the pack. As of right now, if i had to rank the top four teams in the AL i would say: 1) Rangers 2) Tigers 3) Yankees 4) Rays I would place the Red Sox 5th and flip-flop them with the Rays if they signed a pitcher.

    That's not how it works. A player has to be on the roster during what the CBA calls a team's "Championship Season" in order for his salary to be calculated for Competitive Balance Tax Purposes. If the club eats his salary in the off-season and releases him, he is not on the roster, therefore his AAV does not factor into the tax.

    They could pay him his league-minimum salary and release him, erasing his AAV from the payroll, since he will be a FA.

    Why would you do that? Don't we have enough of that around here? Anyways, it also needs to be considered that Ross is coming from AT&T Park to Fenway, that alone should be a boost to his numbers. Also, let it be known that he had a pretty low .279 BABIP and his splits seem like an outlier considering his career production.
