  1. Your numbers are wrong, and Tanaka isn't better than anyone right now, because he has not thrown a single MLB pitch.
  2. I don't need a grip. And i'll stand by my earlier post. Stating your opinion as fact without anything to back it up simply weakens your position(s).
  3. I don't understand the desire to dump Peavy. If healthy, he has the potential to be a #2 pitching out of the 4/5 slot.
  4. You don't know that: A) Tanaka will make the Red Sox better in 2014 or beyond. B ) He will be less expensive than Dempster. Please do not portray your opinion as fact mark.
  5. But he did not make 5 million in 2013. He made his full salary. Whether or not the money was inconsequential in the overall scheme of things.
  6. McCann is not getting 110 million. He's not a catcher long-term.
  7. Pierzynski? Ewwww. Isn't Carlos Ruiz a FA?
  8. He said Napoli would make 9 million more than what he made this year, which is still incorrect, since Napoli hit most, if not all, of his contract incentives.
  9. You haven't been reading this site a lot lately have you? The "JBJ can't make contact" brigade is out in full force, led by Dojji. There seems to be a tendency around here to exaggerate certain player's issues in order to "pimp" another player (be it a FA or departing player) that just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
  10. Yeah but Tanaka has yet to throw a single MLB pitch. You have a general idea of what each of the six guys currently on the roster are capable of, what their weaknesses are and their health/durability issues. We know none of this about Tanaka, so logically, he's a bigger question mark.
  11. What evidence do you have of this?
  12. Or you can think Brett Favre, who played most of his career with AVN.
  13. Tanaka is more of a question mark than anyone currently penciled into our rotation.
  14. No problem lies. He was valuable even from an offense-only standpoint, which was the point of my post.
  15. I heard Cameron issue a mea culpa sometime ago on a podcast regarding this issue, so i wouldn't count him among the doubters anymore. I think that, in general, the Sabr community has begun embracing the reality of intangibles just as they did the importance of defense some time ago.
  16. RSR was specifically talking about offensive numbers though.
  17. Which sabermetricians "hate to admit" that chemistry is a real thing? Big-time Sabr guys like Tango, Dave Cameron and even Bill James himself have acknowledged the impact that a problematic clubhouse can have on a team's performance.
  18. In fairness however, his numbers were not mediocre this season. A 114 OPS+ is at least above average.
  19. It's different because of the sample size, and that's exactly the point i was trying to get at. Even after a significant sample size of success, hitting values always end up evening themselves out, and it happened at the worst of times to the Cardinals. Again, superior timely hitting, or the regular definition of "clutch" does not exist (with some notable exceptions), because it isn't a repeatable skill.
  20. Timely hitting is not a repeatable skill. The Cards were, by far, the best "clutch" hitting team in the Majors, posting league-leading batting averages in every possible run-scoring situation in 2013, yet look at how they fell flat in part of they playoffs and the WS.
  21. This is absolutely, completely, and utterly flat out wrong. You're assuming that the pitchers you mentioned as part of the youth movement are not only ready to succeed in the show, but that they will be able to provide a full inning workload. They don't. That's why they have to push veterans off the team. That's what Bellhorn means. Getting rid of productive veterans for question marks is a fan's thought process, because fans don't have a direct grasp on a pitching prospect's development, and a GM can't afford the luxury of growing pains during a championship window. The Red Sox don't have financial problems right now, so it makes zero sense to jettison any veteran pitcher (even Dempster) unless a prospect is literally setting the world on fire and forces the GM's hand. No current prospect has done that yet, though one of Ranaudo/Barnes may do that next year.
  22. SK pretty much encompassed everything i came here to say even better than i would have.
  23. That sounds really, really creepy.
  24. I think they really need to go in another direction at catcher, although i may be in the minority when it comes to that position.
