  1. Papelbon didn't give any f***s either, back when he was awesome.
  2. For 80 million dollars, David Ortiz gave the Red Sox 8 years of 286 /.386/.572 .958 OPS, 144 OPS + baseball with 291 HR's and 1,141 games played. Not best ever, but absolutely mind-boggling value for an everyday player, even as a DH.
  3. And like Koji, i give zero f***s.
  4. Yes, but performance-hindering injuries are extremely common, which is what i'm referring to here. Guys like A-Gon, Rodriguez, Crawford, Pujols, CarGo and Tulo all signed monster extensions and have seen either their production or games played negatively impacted by specific or nagging injuries. Tulo and CarGo, in particular, are cases of young guys who just seem really injury prone but got massive extensions anyways.
  5. ALDS and WS clincher? This guy. There was no "turning point" for the season. The Sox f***ed s*** up from day one.
  6. Except for the possibility of sudden drop-off in performance and/or serious injury, which is extremely common during a 10-year period for pretty much any baseball player on any team.
  7. Rejecting the QO has no bearing on whether or not he stays. Do you actually know how the QO/FA system works?
  8. He's the #2 rated FA on the market. Why would he settle for a 1 year/14 mill deal? Dempster is making 13 mill next year, and hell, he knows Seattle would pay at least 100 mill for him.
  9. That's because it is a gimme that he'll shoot it down.
  10. Well in this case, because if he doesn't have the innings, that means he wasn't reliable. You can't be an ace if you're not reliable, be it because of health issues or pitch economy.
  11. One player does not a championship win.
  12. I'm talking about the Yankee A-Rod contract. And also, regardless of team, there's a point where "Pay X for player X" is a bad investment because of a cost/production imbalance right away. The Nats paying 126 million for Jayson Werth is just as bad as the Rays paying 126 million for Jayson Werth simply because of the size of the contract, since he's obviously not going to provide 126 million production. I understand that the posting fee is a different beast altogether, but you still have to factor in the contract the player gets after the posting fee, and even that may be an albatross right off the bat.
  13. A segment? You are too kind, fine sir. Too kind.
  14. As of right now, the only thing we can safely project is that the Yankees will look vastly different next year.
  15. And that's exactly why money matters so little yet years matter so much for any potential Ellsbury contract.
  16. You're blending two completely different points as myarguments have been that A) You don't spend to counter the Yankees, and vice versa, as in those two cases the main idea was to improve their ballclub, screwing us over was just collateral damage. B ) There are a lot more suitors for Tanaka than mark is willing to accept. And the Yankees are the least of our worries right now given the number of holes they have and available talent.
  17. This is flat-out not true, as there is a point where there's no way the team will recoup its investment on the player given the $$$/years invested. Look at A-Rod's contract. Everybody and their mother knew right from the get-go that contract would end up in the red, even if Rodriguez played like in-his-prime A-Rod for most of the contract.
  18. Dojji's infatuation with every player on the KC Royals roster borders on insanity. His infatuation with Shields/Butler stretches far beyond the "crazy" threshold. That said, he has a point here, even package is a big overpay for a guy with only one year left of control. If they could get Shields for a decent package, they should explore that option, though i highly doubt KC moves him.
  19. Of course the Sox are interested. They are exploring every possible avenue to make this team better, as they should. That doesn't mean we should exaggerate the team's possibilities of acquiring him, or his potential on-field impact. As for the posting fee, is it really tax deductible? (This is a legitimate question, i have no idea how that would work)
  20. Carlos Gonzalez career splits: Home: 992 OPS. Away: .774 OPS. Food for thought. This year he had a very strange reverse split, but that's because he had a .407 BABIP on the road. Buyer beware. Not that the Sox can make a deal for Gonzalez without sacrificing pieces they'd best hold on to. This is a pipe dream
  21. There's nothing going on with me. I'm just saying you're being illogical about the whole thing. You're making apples to oranges comparison (MiLB comparisons don't apply, because NPB baseball is different....different ball, different pitch counts, mounds and rest days). You're making guarantees you can't make (he'll help the team in the short and long term). You're discounting other teams' interest even though it's contrary to initial reports (where does it say the Giants won't bid?). And you're way undervaluing the posting fee (that money has to come from somewhere). We get it, you like Tanaka, but let's stick to facts and projections here, let's not make stuff up.
  22. He's implying that if they go out and buy a bunch of big names it's likely they'll have poor team chemistry a la 2012 Red Sox. Joe Torre was masterful at making teams filled with big names and short-term mercenary types mesh and win, so i guess SFF's point might not be true if Girardi can do the same.
  23. Damon and Teixeira were the best available position players at positions of need for the Yanks in the offseason they were signed. And what does Babe Ruth have to do with anything here? That doesn't make any sense. Also, how do you know that teams won't pursue Tanaka? There are a bunch of teams with excess money and pitching needs this season. The Yankees, Cubs, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Mets, Red Sox, Seattle and the Giants could all be players for Tanaka. You are trying to convince yourself of a bunch of ideas that either haven't been proven, or are simply not true.
