  1. I'd sign a guy like Young as JBJ insurance and also because of his power against LHP. If it's a cheap contract, then making space for a young player is not a problem. Also, remember that Carp and Nava aren't strictly OF or 1B.
  2. He has 12 position players and 12 pitchers if you include Ortiz. Just throw that other 1B/OF or speedy OF and you're set.
  3. So you'd play a 24-man roster?
  4. An why wouldn't they delay it? They did it with Gonzalez. What, do they not understand such a simple concept?
  5. Not particularly. I just see him as a decent utility type guy. The thing with him is, he can actually play the OF competently.
  6. An extension wouldn't impact 2014 payroll. Also, this was just a fantasy exercise. As i stated in the initial post, it's very likely they bring back two out of Napoli/Drew/Salty. It wouldn't surprise me if they brought back Napoli and Drew, since they have an organizational hole at 1B and could move Bogaerts to 3B. That would keep the lineup very strong while still graduating XB and JBJ in 2014.
  7. Point 1: So you're saying that we should forget about "fairness" and focus on drama to keep the game interesting? No thanks. Point 2: I agree with a lot of this. Point 3: I don't think you know what you're talking about. The current "electronic" strike zone being presented is as close to 100% accurate as it could get, regardless of batter height. I don't know how you came up with an idea that states otherwise. I also don't particularly like the idea of taking the strike zone out of the umpire's hands, but they better improve their strike calling.
  8. Because MVP grilled my chops about the misuse of the word "minimalist" and jung wants (ironically) a shorter post, let's try this again but only filling out positions from within or signing truly cheap free agents. Holes: C, 1B, OF, RP Sign/promote: C- Vasquez 1B-Lavarnway RP-Ranaudo RP-Webster Util-Bloomquist OF-Young
  9. Not all of them. Fred already made a "wake up Ben" comment.
  10. jung, stop whining. I'm on my computer. Also, no need for suggestions, keep it to the topic at hand. The passive-aggressive crap is beyond a person of your age, specially since a long post to start a specific thread is not the same thing as making a thesis for every post you write. Also, word for word, the initial analysis is still shorter than your average post.
  11. The hell did i say?
  12. What's your take on fixing the balls/strikes issue? If it were up to me, i'd have MLB try to enforce consistency from umpires instead of limiting their strike zone "style". The problem with me, as a fan, has never been an umpire's strike zone in itself, but rather when it moves around in-game. Seeing an umpire call a pitch a ball when he called one in the same spot a strike a couple pitches before in that very AB is the pinnacle of aggravation for me.
  13. Part two of your post sums up my thoughts exactly.
  14. Konerko is not a realistic option. He's been quoted as saying CWS or bust. Baker would be an option i'd look into, but Morse's power potential away from a pitcher's park and put in a favorable situation is very very high. As for Davis, unlike Berry, he can actually hit something.
  15. Regarding compensation only. No guys with QO's would be signed, and all main FA's would be allowed to walk.
  16. Now that we're talking about the replay thing, i found this about umpire strike zones pretty funny:
  17. Yeah but all of the older guys would be getting short-term contracts, which is the whole point of the higher salaries. I understand the Wilson argument and accept it, but if i was going to gamble on a 2-year deal on a reliever, he's exactly the type of guy i'd do it with, following the Nathan contract model the Rangers used after he came back from injury.
  18. Again, it's November 15th. The only FA to even sign was Marlon Byrd. I kept preaching the same thing all through last season, and the Sox won a WS. Let the guy execute his off-season plan.
  19. Do you ever make a post here that's not whining about someone/something? Please stop.
  20. Mujica really really ended 2013 on a down note. I wouldn't make the gamble on a RP unless it was a guy like Wilson, who has high level stuff and is a proven high-leverage guy.
  21. If you really think all of the drama and the poisonous atmosphere doesn't affect overall performance, that's up to you, but that's not how things work in any labor scenario. Sure, injuries played a big hand in the s***-show that was 2012, but so did the circus act.
  22. Wilson would really help out the back of the BP. Morse is not as patient as Napoli, but makes more consistent contact and would mostly see time against lefties, whose career OPS against them is really impacted by Safeco. The D at 1B would take a hit anyway. Davis has elite speed, and has gotten on base against lefties at a .370 clip the past few years. As for the money, let's be realistic here. That's about the going rate for role players right now.
  23. They wouldn't limit the number of pitching changes, but rather the time managers had to complete each one. No more talking to the pitcher to give extra time so that reliever can get loose. Otherwise, i agree.
  24. I think you should give a little more credit to the fact that they weren't divided into factions or engaged in a cold war against their own manager. That's also a major difference between the '12 and '13 versions of the Red Sox.
