  1. Actually, their income and expenditures are all available at the Forbes website for the past few years. Their profit margins are easy to calculate, and their spending power, while great, is not as big as you may think, especially calculating lux tax hit considerations. They are spending this year because they'll lose more money if they don't, not because they necessarily want to.
  2. The Sox are still in the market for a power-hitting OF. The 3B market is dry, and the Sox have depth at 3B. That's why.
  3. Per MLBTR. How does this make your smug-ass self feel, monsieur Jacko?
  4. If they re-sign Drew, WMB's getting traded me thinks.
  5. Not window for winning, but rather getting f***ed because of the roster crunch. The way Sabathia's going (Jacko's inane rationalizations aside) plus Teixeira and A-Rod's albatross, all it would take is a couple flops to f*** them over. And if the 2012 Red Sox and 2013 Yankees are any indication, this is Murphy's Law's favorite situation.
  6. They could honestly sign Drew and Napoli, then trade WMB in a package for a power bat knowing Cecchini is down in the minors, and they'd still have an extremely potent offense and a very good chance at the playoffs. Also, XB and JBJ together wouldn't preclude them from making the playoffs, which would not make them a lock to win the WS, and "going for it" as you say only increases playoff odds, which also doesn't make them a lock to win the WS given the nature of playoff baseball. Your logic is flawed either way.
  7. I still think the Sox will get a power-hitting OF. Buy why they'd get a guy who's a product of NYS or a guy who hasn't been able to stay off the DL for the last two years is beyond me.
  8. Riiiiight.
  9. How is it misleading? Those are the numbers. They are the product of injuries, which is precisely my point. Also, you seem to be assuming my post is in defense of Granderson. It isn't. I clearly stated i don't like either of them.
  10. Unless they keep signing long, stupid contracts (Cano anyone?) in which case, the 3-4 years may just be be that window.
  11. I understand that, and i don't disagree. The issue is that they're outspending the possibility of rebuilding on the fly. Every time they miss the playoffs, they lose money, so why set themselves up for a period of time where a number of contracts could crush them out of making the playoffs for several years?
  12. Man there are so many ways you could have made this post without sounding like an *******. Couldn't you think of at least one of them?
  13. This is the main point where i think you and i differ. I think the Yankees have a (rather high) spending limit, but it is there nonetheless. There will come a point when all of these crappy contracts will catch up to them, and a couple of 2013 seasons will be needed to clean house and get s*** in order. We'll see.
  14. Yeah but you shouldn't pay "very good " players "elite player" money, but hey, it's the Yankees.
  15. I'm not big on Mujica, but he's had some recent success and is death to righties. Considering the money and years some of these setup-types are getting, this looks like fair value. Palodios should be happy.
  16. Yeah let's conveniently forget that the last two seasons he's played 179 games and hit for an .834 OPS. He also has a massive contract, making him not only a gamble if traded for, but an expensive one. He also doesn't have the "s*** luck" factor that Ellsbury did when accounting for his injuries. All in all, i don't see it.
  17. I'm not particularly fond of either Granderson nor Kemp, however, i don't see how SFF can criticize Granderson then turn around and pine for Kemp. I don't get it.
  18. That's why i asked him the question.
  19. What exactly do you mean by "empty power"?
  20. Pedroia got extended last season, so our best player did get an extension. As for the rest of your post, i wouldn't trade WMB and Ranaudo for a guy who truly deserves the "oft-injured" title either.
  21. I've been laughing at this for about ten minutes straight.
  22. You know what? I think one of the Mariners/Nationals signs Cano. And i don't think it's just wishful thinking.
  23. What about all of the other players who didn't perform well into their mid/late 30's. Also, whether he is worth 150 million is important to a lot of people. Eventually f***ing yourself over with enough stupid contract leads to a shitfest like the Sox' 2012, or the Yankees' 2013, who apparently have not learned their lesson.
  24. Well we can't be completely sure of anything in baseball, but judging from his scouting reports, other full seasons (9, 8, 9 HR's) and the lingering effect of shoulder injuries like the one he suffered (hey A-Gonz), it's a pretty big gamble. NYS will help, but how much?
  25. Well we should put durability aside for a second and look at his profile as a hitter and defender. Ellsbury's game relies mostly on his speed, because let's face it, 2011's power surge was a mirage. What happens when the legs begin to go? He doesn't profile to increase his power output as he ages like Lofton, Hunter and Damon did, and that allowed their transition into effective corner OF's. The Yanks are betting 153 million dollars on the unlikely scenario that Ellsbury ages like Ichiro did, and that's extremely rare. There's reason for skepticism here, and i'm glad the Red Sox passed on him.
