  1. Plain and simple E1. Is he using moneyball concepts in order to rebuild his team? Yes or no. To me seems so. Are they going to splash in 2013? I have no idea. BL. IMO Cubs will likely suck in 2012 unless Theo make something magical.
  2. I see your point ORS. Still the substance of the discussion wasn't the moneyball thing. Yes, I mentioned it but E1 was who take it as the main issue which i already made clear that it wasn't. I think we can move on. No big deal. On the other hand and now that we are discussing about the moneyball thing... In your opinion, is Theo a moneyballer? if yes, is he going to change his philosophy in order to rebuild the cubs? can you use moneyball approach in order to rebuild a team? is Theo using moneyball concepts in order to rebuild the cubs at some positions, THUS FAR?
  3. Beyond the Cubs will or won't suck next season (which was the center of the discussion), when I see guys like Paul Maholm, David de Jesus and some prospects like Rizzo coming to a big market team and not big moves yet, seems like they are applying some concepts of the moneyball philosophy in order to rebuild their team. On the other hand, out there are plenty of examples of Big Market professional sport teams that rebuild their teams with big acquisitions (as base/core), young talent and depth and are set very quickly in order to compete in the short-term (next season). IMO This is not the Cub case, thus far. We'll see.
  4. As I said, It wasn't the center of the discussion, but Light me E1, what is the moneyball approach? I want to learn.
  5. Well, we are arguing different things. I'm just saying that the current Cubs are very close to be a horrible team in order to face next season.
  6. Put it in whatever philosophy you want. Cubs short/mid-term-future is not encouraging at all. Of course thus far.
  7. Is this just me or the Cubs ain't going anywhere next season. Unless they sign Fielder, keep Garza and make a couple of extra moves, I do not see The Cubs solid.
  8. Bingo. Ortiz would have been an idiot if he hadn't accepted the arbitration. I don't see a bunch of teams paying that contract (15 M). I'm not against Ortiz or the money he wants. He will perform. This is about priorities. Our? Pitching, Pitching, pitching.
  9. If the money is show stopper this season, fine. If true, why in the hell sign Ortiz instead of bringing the SP (assuming we go like this, of course)?. Of course you won't likely be the best offense but at least you would've been more balanced and IMO with more chances to compete.
  10. Our #1 priority this offseason was the goddamn SP. Even a 6 year old could see that. Again, If we stay short (do not bring a solid SP) because Ortiz contract, Ben will be the "boob".
  11. ... and number of years of MLB service and SVs/year regardless the division and environment?... Anyway... As I said, take away the 2010 numbers (bad year IMO, "s*** happens") and his numbers are very impressive. Honestly, I see a healthy/2.5 ERA /30+ SV/+-65 IP Pap next 4 years in Philly, but only time will tell.
  12. I think you put it in better words than I, Fred. I think everybody in this board agrees with this.
  13. Maybe this is a matter of semantics what I've been reading here. Can we compete for the ring? Any team can. What are our odds in order to archive that?. Well, we have been seeded as a 7-10 overall team, thus far. Can we improve that seed? Yes, but there are only a few solid options remaining in the market. Do we have a talented team? Yes, but our current pitching staff is short and with a lot of question marks that could put our talented department (offense) in jeopardy again.
  14. On the other hand this is true. A no-go for an extra +-20 M investement could risk an already 180 M payroll.
  15. This is Theo's legacy. Some say this is LL's. Some say this is a mix. Either way, If I were JH I would be very careful where to put my millions again, You bet.
  16. Good point. But, who would likely fill the 3B after Youk's depart? Aviles? Regardless you already have a question mark in the RF and already a LH-lineup.
  17. I've been saying this since before the 2011 trade deadline. This is January 2012, and still waiting the SP.
