  1. Silence, blasphemer. Eric Patterson is the greatest clutch hitter since Big Papi.
  2. Kalish gets an RBI sac fly, Ortiz tagging.
  3. Verlander's been laboring through 53 pitches, no outs in the third. A pretty good sign so far.
  4. The Sox need to convert this. Our average with RISP has been utter crap the last couple of weeks.
  5. Fine by me, I don't know how to delete a thread. Kalish gets the start again in left. I only saw the first two ABs from him yesterday but I saw some good things, let's hope he keeps it up.
  6. I finally found the site that I've lost before. It comes from someone who reverse-engineered how the rankings work then details who's where. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/elias-rankings-update-2.html They haven't released an updated one for Berkman, but currently his score would make him a borderline Type B (as in, he's almost in the category where you don't get anything by letting him walk).
  7. My bad, I thought both Wood and Berkman had guaranteed years next year, and that's why I thought the Yankees taking in a salary dump (since the money they received only really covers this year). Are the Elias rankings done solely based on this year? If that were the case, I can't imagine Berkman getting type A, but I don't think that's how it's done...
  8. Those teams needed to dump salary. Even though they're sending money to the Yankees, Berkman and Wood are getting huge contracts this year (and next in both cases?) off the books, and the Yankees are footing the bill. Simply put, they're not worth the money they're paid. Although I have no clue what Toronto's GM is thinking. This was his best chance to get something for a 34-year-old reliever, and he spends the deadline demanding Jesus Montero, Casey Kelly, and Jose Iglesias. I think J.P. Riccardi is secretly running that team in some way.
  9. Kalish got the start in left. Let's see where this goes
  10. Jason Heyward please. Jk, he wouldn't be moved for anyone except Strasburg or Longoria.
  11. And who is now a Red Sox? (Red Sock?)
  12. He's always had upside as a power hitter, so I'm sure there'll be teams somewhere that aren't contending, have an open OF slot, and will try him out and see if they can turn him productive and/or flip him for a prospect.
  13. So do you think it's just a matter of the FO having seen all they needed to from Nava, and now giving Kalish/others a chance to figure out where they stand for next year?
  14. The fans love him. He hit pretty well in his debut with the team (although - despite the fact that he has had high BABIP everywhere he goes, his BABIP was like a ridiculous .380-something, and this is while hitting 40% fly balls). Hermida got the first chance to prove himself, and now that he's DFA'd Kalish gets the first crack at major league action. Is this just a matter of seeing if Kalish is ready to join the big leagues next year? Or does the FO believe that Nava is really not much more than a AAAA player? Or do they want him to get more seasoning in the minors?
  15. Some discussions of Manny being traded, lol (no not to the Red Sox again)
  16. Heard #RedSox #Braves talks about Jacoby Ellsbury are more than rumor. EDIT: Ah you beat me to it.
  17. 50 minutes and counting, unless you get some leeway? Ellsbury going would be a shocker. I can't imagine his value is terribly high at the moment.
  18. Man, all our s***** players get sent to the NL and turn into aces. Werth has not performed well as of late. His batting average is propped up majorly by BABIP (throughout the season; I'd guess it should be closer to .270) and his ISO has declined majorly from .302 in May to .202 in June and .167 in July. For reference, Bill Hall's ISO is .215 this season. Interestingly, his slugging is .567 against righties, .398 against lefties - the complete opposite of his career numbers.
  19. There is no way we get Felix - an ace pitcher, who is very young, throws really hard, and is signed to a club friendly deal - unless we basically packaged our top 10 prospects and shipped them off. Matsuzaka doesn't have ace ability. Only Kelly has ace potential out of our pitching prospects (actually I'm not sure about Pimentel but I don't think I've heard "ace ceiling"). King Felix trade talks won't be possible until he has a short amount of time left on his contract, an extension isn't getting done, AND the Mariners are not competing; or Theo does something very, very, very stupid. The rotation is fine, it would be better with Felix but IMO it's still top 3 in the MLB.
  20. The Sox rotation without Beckett has had a revolving door of starters in his place (Wakefield, Doubront, etc), whereas the Yankees starters that have started in place of Pettite have made fewer starts (4 starts between Mitre and Mosley, while Wakefield has already made 16 starts of 5.56 ERA ball). And Beckett has been pitching hurt, which nukes his numbers to career lows; given how he's performed coming off the DL, I'd expect to see numbers closer to his career norm. Also, I thought it was "be all end all"? (I'm not being a grammar snark here, I'm actually not sure but that's how I thought the phrase was used)
  21. A.J. Burnett: 4.52 ERA, 6.82 K/9, 3.71 BB/9, nothing in his peripherals to suggest bad luck (aside from a slightly higher-than-normal .313 BABIP) Javier Vazquez: 4.54 ERA, 7.23 K/9, 3.45 BB/9, 33.7% GB rate, ridiculously low BABIP of .255 (even for a fly ball pitcher) I'm sorry...but what? Lester, Buchholz, a disappointing Lackey, and an inconsistent Dice-K have been far better. Add in a healthy Beckett and a string of good starts by Lackey and Dice-K, and this shouldn't even be a discussion.
  22. He's had nagging injuries for quite a long time, so he has indeed "sack[ed] up". Does Galarraga throw anything but sinkers and sliders? Also, are you proposing that the Sox move Beltre out of a power spot (6) into the 2 spot? Lowrie has been hitting well of late and seems to have the patience to get on base.
  23. I believe Gose was flipped for Brett Wallace, who was a top power prospect but has struggled this year. Meanwhile, Edwin Jackson was just dealt for Daniel Hudson, who was ranked #66 on Baseball America's 2010 rankings, and David Holmberg, another prospect. Seriously, wtf? Haren was traded for Saunders (a terrible pitcher who will get raises through arbitration) and two mid-level prospects. Oswalt got Happ and two other mid-level guys, although Wallace does have potential (but is not a top guy). Are these teams losing a ton of value in prospects by asking for major league pitching? It's not like the Dbacks and Astros are close to contending, and getting (at best) #3 guys and foregoing potential star material won't get them any closer.
  24. Hell, Wilson Ramos was dealt for Matt Capps (who was having a good year, but seriously Matt Capps?) Toronto wanted Kelly or Iglesias from the Sox for Downs, and Montero from the Yankees. It seems like the price for bullpen arms is really high this deadline, and the price for ace pitchers a lot lower than people thought it'd be.
  25. Um, Halladay is generally considered the best pitcher in baseball. He got knocked around in 06 and 07 (I don't know enough about Halladay then to know why), and posted ERAs of 3.2 and 3.7. In 08 and 09, Halladay posted ERAs of 2.8. Lester has put up marks of 3.2 and 3.4 in 08 and 09, and threw far fewer innings. Josh Johnson is arguable - he was a similar pitcher to Lester until this year, but his ERA is probably deflated due to his park, division's offenses, being in the NL, etc. Now, in terms of long term value you would take Lester over Halladay because of age, and Lester over Johnson because of his spectacular contract. Lee has excellent control. His fastball is actually one of the best pitches in the league in terms of how it's performed, despite the fact that it sits around 90-91. However, his fly ball rate actually exceeds his ground ball rate this season; I'd wait to see how he does pitching in Texas before I proclaim him better than Lester. Lester is probably a safer bet.
