  1. trend or flukey stat in a small sample size? only time will tell whether he's a .300 hitter or he's hitting over his head right now. there's a big difference between a .300 hitter with a .380 obp and no power and a .280 hitter with a .350 obp and no power
  2. i probably won't be seeing much of this one, if i catch the beginning at all. it would make my 4th to be in first place by the time i'm watching the fireworks but i'd be happy if we just win
  3. i agree with you example. and let's remember that he is a 38 year old closer and he has already recieved a cortisone shot for discomfort in his ankle, who's to say he holds up over a full season? he's pretty much the least appealing bullpen arm we could have went after last year considering the draft picks he netted us, his age and the amount it would have taken to acquire him IF he was willing to be a set up man at all which he probably wasn't
  4. gardner isn't hitting the ball on the ground any more than he did in his previous two years with the yankees. in 2008 he hit the ball on the ground 47.9% of the time, in 2009 he hit the ball on the ground 49% of the time and this year he's hitting the ball on the ground 50% of the time. he was never a .300 hitter in the minors so only time will tell whether something clicked for him at age 25 or whether he's hitting above his head right now
  5. the only way signing wagner is a feasible scenario would be if we went back in time, brain washed wagner into thinking he really didn't want to make the 400 saves mark as a closer but instead set up for the red sox in the last year of his career and then spend the $7 million we would have spent on someone like beltre or scutaro on wagner. and if that happened and we missed the playoffs by 1 game, people would be complaining that we didn't sign beltre or scutaro
  6. he's a solid young player. if he can keep it up over a longer sample size i think he'll get a lot of attention
  7. not to make a big deal about beating the orioles with lester on the mound, but this team has been special so far. they simply find ways to win regardless of who's in the lineup, who's on the mound or who they're facing. extra bases pointed out how cy young award winning pitchers are 0-4 with a 6.57 era against them
  8. yeah, even if we did happen to have an extra $7 million lying around that we didn't spend and were willing to pay an additional $1.5 million in luxury tax by signing wagner, it's unlikely that he would have wanted to sign with the red sox. he went to the braves because he's at 386 careers saves and he wants to reach 400 before he retires after this year. saito would have made more sense as others have pointed out
  9. it's a proven fact that position players have more influence over a game than relief pitchers. there's a reason that the best relief pitchers in baseball aren't paid anywhere near what the best position players are
  10. both teixeira and a-rod have taken a step back over the last month
  11. a reliever who pitches 70 innings in a year does not have as much impact as a good position player who plays in more like 1,000 innings a year. not even mariano rivera has had as much of a win value as jd drew
  12. malarkey. they've also "proven" over the last few years that they play poorly in april. 2009 - .565 in April 2008 - .467 in April 2007 - .417 in April 2006 - .542 in April 2005 - .400 in April this year they had a .652 wpct in april because believe it or not, just because something happened last year doesn't mean it will happen this year
  13. i'm with you ors. if we've conceding that the yankees will have a great second half in july, then why not just concede that they'll win the world series again? just because something happened last year has nothing to do with this year
  14. the yankees have done better in the second half the past few years largely because they got off to horrible starts in april. that wasn't the case this year
  15. yes, if only we had a time machine and we could go back 3 years and not sign jd drew so we could have signed billy wagner this offseason. now we're getting somewhere
  16. not to be rude, but i think the argument's starting to get a little out there when there are some people claiming that it would have been worth $14 million to sign billy wagner as our second set up guy. hypothetically, if we did have an extra $7-$14 million lying around last offseason and we didn't spend it, i could think of a lot better ways to spend it than billy wagner
  17. it's unlikely that they had an extra $7 million to spend and they didn't spend it
  18. anything can happen but the blue jays were dead last in runs scored in the month of june. they haven't scored 8 runs in a game since may 23rd
  19. that accounts for less than $1 million of wagner's $7 million contract. if the sox signed wagner they wouldn't have signed a player like beltre, scutaro, beckett or cameron and they wouldn't have gotten the two draft picks
  20. well, that should do it. romero came into this game 9th in the AL in ERA and the yankees came in to the game struggling to hit even bad pitchers and they blow it open in the third. that's baseball for ya
  21. what free agent would his $7 million contract be replacing on the team?
  22. romero's imploded in this inning. even if he gets out of this jam, he's over 70 pitches through 2.2 innings
  23. i'm with you example. wagner would be great this year but i'd rather have the prospects and $7 million's a little pricey for a middle reliever
  24. 4 straight hits for the yankees with risp, i guess you guys just have to complain about the team some more lol
