  1. The NFL has already pretty much gutted defense. No need for baseball to do the same.
  2. Mets have been a disaster zone for years. Their roster's been a hapless sack of s*** for the most part. No idea what David Wright thought he was doing reupping when he was free and clear.
  3. Although it's a shrewd bet that performance will fall off after age 35, without a little help from the cream and the clear, and especially for pitchers. But let's throw that out of the window and sign players through 38-40 with vast sums of money that we'll never see an appropriate return on.
  4. Holy s***, were there enough goals in the All Star Game?
  5. There are intangibles, too of course. You need to know does he bust it out of the box, does he take bad routes to balls (maybe his speed masks it, and that doesn't show in stats). Is he overconfident? Does he not give a s***? Cancer in the clubhouse? These things impact your team as well, and need consideration when kicking the tires on a player.
  6. This is why 100% guaranteed multi year contracts are insane, and a detriment to the game. (Sure, it's just coincidental that so many players have their best season when in the last year of their contract).
  7. Also, welcome back!
  8. Watching a player tells you what he could do. Stats tells you what he HAS done. Some stats are misleading because of the effect of other players in the outcome (W/L for pitchers). But at the end of the day, which approach - eyes or numbers - tells the fullest story when trying to gauge greatness and/or whether to hand out a seven year contract?
  9. What, like the Bible?
  10. Jets fans aren't willing to step forward and out themselves. I'm not a fan at all but these latest guys can't be any worse than the last two, right? Right?
  11. And I'm not necessarily a fan of defensive shifts, but I think the amount of offense is fine, don't take away this advantage, and more importantly, how would you police it? Lines on the field?
  12. OK, his first idea is eliminate defensive shifts. He sucks. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/new-commissioner-rob-manfred-open-to-banning-defensive-shifts-172529801.html
  13. Legend. R.I.P.
  14. The teams are locked into the same death spiral as public company boards of directors. When hiring a CEO they want to pay above the average, so that bumps up the average, and the whole thing repeats over and over again.
  15. http://espn.go.com/blog/jayson-stark/post/_/id/1056/seven-year-deals-for-pitchers-big-trouble Here's a good article about how crazy these contracts are for pitchers. It's nice to see a GM actually admit it.
  16. Well basically there's Shields and.... who else is out there that could be called a top pitcher?
  17. You couldn't get a bag of baseballs for Craig right now.
  18. Just saw that Arod has met with Bonds for hitting tips. Right, hitting....
  19. Three Maple Leaf fans were ticketed and banned for a year for throwing their jerseys onto the ice. Could have been worse, they could have been banned for only six months.
  20. Does this involving giving up Betts for a Zimmermann rental?
  21. I wouldn't go as far as saying worst starter in the majors but yeah, no confidence he'll be any good, not consistently, anyway.
  22. So I just found out they pay him $15mil for 14 years. Nice flexibility up front, but what about after he's gone and you're stuck paying him for nothing? Can't believe people are acting like this is a good thing. Deferred money of significant amount is always an albatross. Also, what's this come out to, $150,000 per inning or so?
  23. Watching a Comcast Sports Net broadcast of a Blue Jackets game and it's f***ing brutal. They have an onscreen ad up next to the scoreline all the time, and the colorman sounds like a goddamn Simpsons character.
  24. Especially since only one season has been below 3.00 era. Ridiculous what $210 mil buys nowadays. However, he's probably going to see improvement going over to the National League. But really, a very good player being paid like the best ace of all time. Ridiculous.
