  1. There have been reports that the Sox are likely to be careful with their money and go for pillow contracts. That makes Napoli a perfect hit, His numbers at Fenway park are unreal. Give him a 1/20 or 2/30 contract for him to rebuild his value, and he'll be a hammer for the Red Sox next year.
  2. There are a few good pitchers that have one year left on their deals. I don't think trading for a "legit number 1" is going to happen, but I think trading for a potential number 1 could be a good idea. The Red Sox have a habit of trading young cost-controlled backend pitchers for stars. Masterson, Gabbard, Weiland, Arroyo come to mind. I can see a sign and trade centered around Doubront for a guy like Peavy, Johnson, Santana. Garza, Haren and Lincecum also have one year left before they hit free agency, but I don't think they fall into the same class right now. The Sox should ignore Greinke completely, and take a hard look at Sanchez, Dempster, Mccarthy and Marcum.
  3.
  4. The cool thing about playing spoiler is that even if the Red Sox do lose against the Yankees--which by no means is a good thing-- atleast by losing they're giving payback to the Orioles for 2011.
  5. Tomorrow through Sunday, my favorite team will be the Tampa Bay Rays. From the 18th through the 20th, my favorite team will be the Blue Jays. 21-23rd, Athletics. And so on until October 1st, when the Red Sox are my favorite again.
  6. Zend is a pretty popular PHP framework. Completely legit, the message was probably directed to Yezsir, and has to do with the technology of the site. I went to a conference where they were sponsors a few weeks ago. Probably no big deal.
  7. More often than not, the "posters with critical analysis" are just pissed off fans who come here, rant, and leave. The ones who stick around are generally older, more cynical fans (I'm not pointing any fingers, but demographics are what they are:lol:) People who are optimistic about the team's future are generally more likely to be here for the purpose of enjoying their team, no matter how terrible, and they'll stick around and say stuff like "This is going to be our year". I think that the majority of the posters who were banned deserved it. When was the last time you saw a major argument on TalkSox? Lately, the entire discussion has been about baseball, and I think that's the best way to open a discussion. Oddly enough, there haven't even been that many gloating Yankee fans around either.
  8. Lester is not going anywhere. His 2014 option is nulled if traded, so he's going to be worth significantly more to the Red Sox than another team. Players are allowed to have bad seasons, you know?
  9. Looks like Texeira may be out for the season. I think this might be the final nail in the coffin for the Yankees.
  10. I'm very much convinced that the Sox can still be competitive in 2013, and playoff caliber by 2014-2015 by picking up mid-to-high tier players for high AAV, and low years. When they identify players that are bonafide stars with good character--even to the most critical of armchair GMS--they should go long. Look at the farm system-- Most of the top prospects are in AA or above. Bogaertz, Bradley, and Brentz are not that far off. Barnes, Owens, Rubby, and Webster will take a bit longer to develop, but there is a good chance for the Sox to find some gems in that group.
  11. It should be 6 more games-- I didn't think the Red Sox were going to play in October either:lol:
  12. Did you watch Doubront pitch at the beginning of this year? There were games where he looked phenomenal, #3 stuff. His splits explicitly show that he's worn down through the season.
  13. Its a shame the Red Sox didn't know that before signing Crawford.
  14. Since when was Bard not an option? I was all for him making the jump to start, but they should have seen the warning signs far more quickly than they did.
  15. Player A's career: .340 OBP, .770 OPS, 25 steals per season, 3 gold gloves. Player B's career: .330 OBP, .770 OPS, 45 steals per season, 1 gold glove. If Carl Crawford made 140 million, I hesitate to believe that Victorino will want to settle. The Red Sox are probably going to be handing out high annual value one or two year contracts, and Victorino seems like a perfect fit, especially since his current team won't need him in 2013.
  16. The guy will probably end the season with an OPS in the .680s-- well below his career numbers. I don't see him turning down a 15-20 million dollar contract to rebuild his value for 2014.
  17. Granderson shouldn't be the Red Sox's target. I think the perfect opportunity for them is Shane Victorino. He's a player coming off a bad season, with a good combination of speed and power. The Red Sox are probably looking at players that they can get with one year contracts with high annual value. Victorino would be able to rebuild his value here, as the Red Sox themselves begin to rebuild. With Crawford, Kemp, Ethier in the outfield for the Dodgers in 2013, he'll likely be available.
  18. In 71.2 innings, Aceves has lost 9 games. In 57.2 innings, Papelbon has lost 6 games. That's essentially 7.45 losses in the same number of innings, maybe more in the AL East. So basically, your first option (Bailey) is hurt all season. Your second option (Bard) has turned into a pumpkin. The team's third best option (Aceves) cost the Red Sox maybe one or two wins that Papelbon may have saved, maybe fewer. If I were to look at places where this team has f***ed up this year, the lack of Papelbon really is not near the top of the list.
  19. I explicitly said it isn't 2007 anymore, meaning that, yeah, he was pretty damn good in the mid to late 2000s. But so many people continue to bitch and whine about letting him leave, as if he is the second coming of Mo Rivera... someone needs to keep them in perspective. Because he isn't all that great anymore.
  20. Not surprisingly, Brian Scalabrine retired. The interesting part is that it somehow made it to the front page of Yahoo Sports. Huh.
  21. If you told me he was in the same class as Kimbral, Chapman, or Rivera, I'd laugh pretty hard. Among major league relievers, He's 67th in ERA, 35th in WHIP, 27th in WAR, his FIP in the mid 20s, and has more losses than all but 8 of the 140 qualified major league relievers. Seriously guys, this shouldn't even be a discussion.
  22. After everything that this team has been through, are we really still arguing that Papelbon wasn't paid too much? There has not been anything elite about Papelbon since 2009. I know everyone likes to have these great big illusions of grandeur about Pap, but it isn't 2007 anymore. He has been a mid-tier closer that is getting paid more than a guy named Rivera. It was a terrible contract that he hasn't even earned on the first year, and it will only get worse.
  23. I just heard that Melky Cabrera may possibly win the batting title. How hilarious would that be?
  24. No. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Designated_hitter
