  1. I agree with this statement vehemently. The team's pitching has been absolutely terrible the last year, and they went ahead and fired all the coaches, fired the medical staff, put as many scapegoats out there as possible... but haven't touched the guy who has a full point higher CERA than Shoppach/Varitek/Lavarnway in his time in Boston.
  2. The talent is there. Who knows what the offseason will bring, but he's simply too good to be a darkhorse.
  3. I've been asking this question to the Lincecum skeptics. If Timmy won the Cy Young in 2013, would you be legitimately surprised?
  4. In 71 regular season games, Johnson blew 3 saves. In three games against the Yankees, he's blown 2. What a loser.
  5. Go look it up, the guy had like 14 K/9 in the minors.
  6. Over the year in 2011, he hit .255. The 30 games in Boston don't count because overall he hit .255.
  7. What about the AL Championship Series?
  8. Ellsbury would only be 31. And generally, teams spend more and more every year-- not less.
  9. For long term? Absolutely not. Short term? That's what interests me. My stance on Ellsbury is a bit unique. I think the Red Sox should offer him a 2/30 to 2/40 contract. Its a win-win for everyone involved. Going into free agency in 2013, teams are not going to give Ellsbury more than 4 years because he's so injury prone. So he'll take a 4 year deal and head back into free agency in 2017 at age 34 with his speed waning and fewer suitors. But, if he takes the next two years, in a park he knows he can succeed and stays healthy, he'll still be young enough at 31 to get an elite contract and probably get up to 6 years, and make bank from 31-37. It gives the Red Sox an elite hitter for another year, and the opportunity to trade him if the situation goes well.
  10. Ellsbury had a .300 average and 70 steals in 2009, and a .280 average with 50 steals in 2008. He also plays a pretty damn good center field. Ellsbury hasn't hit that many home runs, but he's definitely been everything you could ask for from the position for atleast 3-4 years.
  11. Twice, actually.
  12. Well, by sell the farm I meant for an elite-elite talent-- at the same level as Tulo. That would mean Miguel Cabrera, or Pujols +cash or a player of that caliber.
  13. Tulo is a very good player. One of the best. But when you're talking about selling the farm, paying $160 million dollars, and getting back a player that is incredible injury prone, I'm very concerned. The Red Sox have league average at SS, with a combination of guys who will be average. If they sell the farm, it should be for a first baseman or a starter.
  14. Look who's doing the baiting now.
  15. I'm not so sure. Austin Jackson had a 5.6 WAR this season. Ian Kennedy, 3.1. Granderson... 2.6 WAR. These kinds of moves can be scary. When played have HOF ceilings, and are playing mediocre, those players still end up costing HOF-caliber hauls of prospects. Look at the Agon trade-- he was only 28, everyone said it would be great for him to get out of SD, and in a real lineup. Josh Beckett, cost Hanley and Anibal.
  16. The fact that some people don't recognize him as a MLB talent is hate on him. By now he should have proven he's not just a AAAA played and he's officially a meh major leaguer.
  17. The idea is that the Red Sox would look at those players, find the ones that are healthy, good fits and would accept the most reasonable contracts. I'm not singling out any specific player, just the type of players the Sox should look at. There are a lot of options... the Red Sox's scouts and sabermasters just need to find the best ones. I was referring to Josh Johnson, and Anibal Sanchez. Guthrie is 33 and has a 4.12 ERA in the AL East for seasons with 180-200 innings per year, so I think he could be a good affordable solution for the middle/back end of the rotation. Laroche is a 30 HR/90 RBI hitter most years. Miguel Cabrera ain't walking through that door-- Laroche's numbers are exactly what this team could use. Name me a player that hits 30 HR and won't cost 10 million a year.
  18. I've been stressing this idea in a few places, but I think it would be in the Red Sox's best interest to trade John Lackey for Jason Bay and cash. Lackey could definitely succeed in the National League, and he's the last Theo-Fail contract left. Jason Bay is a perfect buy-low player who has done very well in his time at Fenway, and even if he continues to suffer from concussion symptoms, atleast his contract will be gone at the end of 2013, unlike Lackey's, who could haunt us for another three years. 1) Re-sign Ross and Papi. 2) Peavy/Haren/Johnson-- Get one of those guys. 3) Sanchez/ Marcum/ Ervin Santana/ Floyd/ Guthrie/ Mccarthy/ Dempster/ Kuroda/ Jackson/Lohse -- Get one of those guys. 4) Laroche/Pena/Berkman/Napoli/Swisher -- Get one of those guys for first base. 5) Add a real closer. If done correctly, the Red Sox could be a playoff team and still be way under the luxury tax. Not easy, but not impossible either.
  19. I just don't understand the Nava hate. He's never going to hit like Manny Ramirez. He's never going to field like Carl Crawford in his prime. Is he the answer for the future? No. Does he have the versatility to play multiple positions? No. However, he's a player than will give you near-average stats on a below average team, and he'll work his ass off to try to stay here. Everyone complained and complained and complained about Scutaro for being just that-- a journeyman who took years to get a chance in the majors, and turned solid, but not great. Then we got Aviles, and now what is everyone saying?
  20. Still counting this one:lol:
  21. I think many people here don't seem to realize how much flexibility the Red Sox have in their rotation. If Lester has a bounce back year, and they pick up two quality pitchers then this team is going back to the playoffs next year. I don't remember there being a year in recent memory where pitchers were as widely available as they are this year. Haren/Peavy/Greinke/Lohse are all out there on the FA market, supplemented by the likes of Sanchez/ Marcum/ Ervin Santana/ Floyd/ Guthrie/ Mccarthy/ Dempster/ Kuroda/ Jackson. Not to mention all the guys available for trade like Garza/ Johnson/ Lincecum/ Rodriguez/ Shields. I know someone will come in and tell me why each of those guys suck... but I think there is a very good chance that it will be a buyer's market for SP this year.
  22. Fail. Fail. This one was overly optimistic in the first place. Spot on Ross and Sweeney both performed very well, I'm going to count this one. July. Wow Crawford is a sack of crap. Technically correct:lol: Umm, I had meant Middlebrooks, not Lavarnway Not true. Both his RBIS and GDPs went down by about 20. I can dream, can't I? They never caught the person who did that, so let's pretend I didn't get this one correct. Absolutely.
  23. This organization had a choice between Youkilis and Valentine. They made their choice clear. I doubt Youkilis will forget that.
  24. Well done Miguel Cabrera. It is going to be a tight race for the MVP, that's for sure.
