  1. Could be a lot of players. The list is very long: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Boston_Red_Sox_season It will probably end up being a reliever, or utility type player.
  2. Beat my thread by mere seconds. Not thrilled-- hoping that the Red Sox didn't pay something ridiculous, like the reported rumors of Barnes or Bard.
  3. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. I was very turned off with how he treated Dice-k, and how that relationship completely melted down. Manny Delcarmen stated that he was afraid to tell Farrell about one of his injuries. I don't think that's the kind of guy I want handling a team that is going to have a ton of young players in the years to come. Pitchers seemed to leave the Red Sox and turn into elite talent almost immediately. The beer-and-chicken club started under his watch in 2010 as well.
  4. I absolutely agree with you here. But I think the problem is that year-over-year, not only is this their third manager in three years, they'll have their fourth pitching coach in four years, Dave Magadan just defected, and many of the minor coaches have left/fired. It seems like Tim Bogar is the only coach that has been around any considerable amount of time. There has been so much inconsistency within the team's coaching that Farrell may be their solution.
  5. The Farrell talk scares me. I don't know why they're even discussing players of that caliber. They should do the same thing they did when the Blue Jays asked for Buchholz, hang up the f***ing phone. You don't ruin a franchise for a manager, especially when there are other solid candidates available.
  6. Weird.... no one has said THUH YAAAAANKEEEEES LOOOOOSE!!!! Needed to be done.
  7. Phil Coke closing against the middle of the Yankee order? Well s***.
  8. Uhoh. I sure hope this doesn't turn into a Pedro inning.
  9. Verlander, you are my hero.
  10. Ellsbury's best season was a 9.4 WAR. Tulo's best season was a 6.3 WAR. Ellsbury is here. He can handle the pressure in Boston. He's proven he hits in Fenway. But my point is, I dislike Tulo for all the reasons I dislike Ellsbury. He's hurt all the time, and costs too much. If anyone of the killer B's gets traded this offseason for any non-Felix/Verlander player, Ben Cherington has failed this offseason.
  11. A baseball GM is allowed to take risks, but all three of these moves would be relatively big risks. Some are big in prospects/money, and others are in going into 2013 with a huge hole in their roster. The problem with Tulo is that he has an insanely expensive contract, and at 28 years old, he's only averaged about 118 games per season. Ellsbury averages 110. If we're going to give 200 million to a guy who is hurt all the time, why not just pay our own guy, keep Bogaerts, and go for someone else?
  12. The problem is that you're giving up a significant amount of prospects for a pile of question marks. I think the Sox can do better.
  13. How do people feel about Anibal Sanchez? After seeing him shutout the Yankees for seven innings, I'd certainly be happy to see him do that for the Red Sox next year. Obviously, the Red Sox need a true ace on top of him, but I wouldn't mind seeing him here.
  14. Now that we've seen the end of the Beckett/Dice-k era in Boston, I get the feeling we'll all be saving 2-3 hours every week.
  15. Be that as it may, that's the direction this league is going.
  16. I searched through this thread and didn't see any statistical arguments from you on this one. Were they in another thread?
  17. One of the things I noted at the beginning of the season this year was that the Red Sox had gotten significantly younger in 2012. Normally, it is better to have younger players because they are much more likely to stay healthy, so I considered that a good thing. However, a big part of the problem was that the oldest players on the team were Beckett/Lackey/ Youkilis. Throw in a coach like Bobby Valentine who immediately got on Youk's bad side, and instead of providing veteran leadership, the four of them ended up acting childish.
  18. I'm starting to feel less and less as if that is the case. If the Red Sox aren't clever enough to offer him a 2 year deal, what are the possible outcomes? 1) They trade him this offseason, and sell low because of his poor 2012, and because they know the chance to resign him are low. 2) He has a great 2013, and they sell high on him at the trade deadline, or keep him for a title run. 3) He has a decent or bad 2013 and they keep him at the trade deadline and will be able to afford to extend him. Selling low on him seems likes the worst option available. If the Red Sox can get two top prospects for him, absolutely pull the trigger. However OF is the one position that where there is a surplus in the free agent market this year, so I doubt any team is going to be willing to overpay for a guy who had a .680 OPS last year.
  19. May this end in a 27 inning win for the Orioles, who go on to be swept by the tigers.
  20. I hope this ends with a 14 inning win for Baltimore. Tire out both of this teams for the Tigers.
  21. The crazy part about Ellsbury is that teams are unwilling to give anything of value for him, yet Boras seems to want 300 million dollars.
  22. I don't know if you've heard this, but they're moving the fences in at Safeco in order to make their park more attractive to offensive free agents. They traded Cliff Lee for Smoak, so I bet that they're going to continue thinking very highly of him-- especially because of his second half split was a full .150 OPS points higher than his first half. Smoak may be one of those players that are untradeable simply because Seattle values him more than he's worth.
  23. I just don't think there is any case for saying that the player development here has been bad. There has been a gap of quality major leaguers since 2009, and I understand that, but that has nothing to do with player development. They churn out good players when they have the talent to work with, but they've traded away most of their top picks that should be blossoming now. Middlebrooks, Tazawa, Reddick, and to a lesser extent Doubront have definitely shown themselves to be major league talent developed by this system this year.
