  1. The beauty of Lackey's big PR stunt is that he set the bar so low in 2011/2012 that pitching to major league average stats is going to make him a hero.
  2. I still think that this team could pick up another starter. With Lackey's 9.00+ ERA in spring training, Rick Porcello makes sense in a good number of ways. Even if he is relegated to long man/spot start duty, that's probably something he's expected from the start of this season anyway.
  3. Its a shame they didn't give Ciriaco more opportunities to work on his defense in the outfield. From the outside, he seems like the perfect utility guy. He has played most positions with decent defense, he has tons of speed, and he hits just well enough that he's worth a spot on the bench-- yet not so good he's demanding a full time job.
  4. Absolutely. The other thing to realize about a guy like Iglesias is that he'll be incredibly cost efficient based on WAR. The best comparison to Iggy is Brendan Ryan, who tends to be one of the best defenders in baseball, and his .600 OPS earned him 3 million in his final arbitration year. If you're paying your shortstop 3-6 million, it allows the financial flexibility to load up on power bats around him.
  5. Doubront is throwing batting practice today.
  6. Nava had a .380 OBP versus righties last year. As long as you don't put someone fast like Ells/Victorino behind him, it makes plenty of sense.
  7. Jeter's ankle is looking to be a big issue coming into 2013. The Yankee lineup keeps getting worse and worse.
  8. CMW is everything a team should want as a depth option. That being said, he's a lot like Dice-k. 32 year old right-handers who saw success for 2 years in the late 2000s, but have otherwise been incredibly injured and or ineffective.
  9. Welcome back. It does get pretty funny when the civil war really starts to explode. People keep telling me that I'm not one of the "ballwashers" so to speak, and I really need to start working on that.
  10. For most of the offseason, things have been pretty civil, but the last month has brought us back to normal.
  11. MLB.com had him in their top 100 prospects this year.
  12. This season will be a very watchful one. They'll ride out their 1/2 and either be a playoff team, or they'll dump the team and pick up a pile of high upside prospects. The general strategy and open flexibility puts the Red Sox in a win-win situation to put the organization back on track. However, the problem I see with this team is that even if Lester and Buchholz rebound, it doesn't even matter if the #4/5 starters are Chris Hernandez and Steven Wright. We've already seen what happens when the team has a good 1-2 punch in Lester + Beckett/Buchholz, but the back end sucks.
  13. Is this targeted to me? I have a variety of mixed reactions to his signings. Gomes, Uehara, Napoli, Ross all for 24 million? Great. Dempster? I don't love it, but it is a very reasonable signing. Hanrahan for Stolmy? Well done. Victorino? Love the player, deal is a bit crazy. The one thing I'm highly critical about is how they've handled starting pitching. Their rotation had the worst ERA in Red Sox history and somehow adding Dempster is going to fix everything? We heard about so much activity while they were looking at pitching, they seemed to be on everyone. Then, Dempster was signed and then silence. Lackey should have been the #6 guy.
  14. NWIH. Sweeney is a significantly better defender. They're just giving Gomes more reps in LF because he needs it much more.
  15. I just don't understand why this team suddenly realized it needed depth now. Between its top options, three are injured all the time, one is a nutcase, and another came off TJ. There were plenty of things that could have gone wrong -- its a bit of a surprise that only one of them actually ended up hurt so far. Maybe Cherries is looking at all those pitchers with minor league contracts and opt-out clauses if not on the opening day roster? Might be a good place to look for a #6 starter:huh:
  16. Dear baseball. Please return to the United States. Your pal, Pal.
  17. Jeff Green doing his best Lebron impression against the Heat, 38 points so far. Beastly.
  18. Indeed you are right. Thank you!
  19. With Drew and Ortiz out opening day, my perspective on this has changed. It makes a good deal of sense to see what he can do in the majors, then send him back down for three weeks at some point to hold onto 2019. Gomes->DH, Bradley->LF When Ortiz returns, Gomes-> LF, Bradley->AAA. If Ortiz misses the season, maybe use Lavarnway once he gets hot in AAA, or get creative.
  20. It may very well fall in Boston, only because back-to-back road games are always a bitch.
  21. In 74 games last year, he hit only 4 home runs. In spring training so far, he has hit .214, with no triples, home runs, or stolen bases. Unless he lights the world on fire, no one is going to look at the last four seasons and ignore the two bad ones. His talent is so physical that if any part of him is nagging, his stats suffer severely.
  22. He threw from home to second in 1.77 seconds. Current Red Sox scouts have never seen that kind of release, apparently. http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/alex-speier/2013/03/12/closer-behind-plate-making-christian-vazquez-c
  23. Agreed, good point.
  24. I keep hearing more and more good things about him. The hope is that someday he'll learn how to hit.
  25. I keep wondering if Ellsbury will be the Kyle Lohse of 2014. He's going to cost a draft pick to sign, he'll want Hamilton money on Jed Lowrie health, and his best skill-- speed-- won't last into a 7 year contract. It just seems like no one is willing to trade decent prospects for him, so why would they give up big money AND a first rounder?
