  1. As I mentioned a few posts back... if the Red Sox offered him a one year contract, then what? He's a top 5 hitter in baseball. Up there with Cabrera, Votto, Fielder. They wouldn't be able to replace his offense production or PR value in 2014, no matter how the prospects develop. So, what's the harm in paying him 11 million for 2014 now, rather than 15 million in 2014? His ankle issue is a nagging thing, not a career ender.
  2. Well, I don't necessarily see it as selfishness. This is a guy who has seen some pretty awful contracts in his day. He's seen Lackey get 80 million, Crawford get 140, Jenks get 12 etc etc etc. Ortiz has been on team friendly contracts for the Red Sox his entire career. When was he going to get his? The 2/25 contract he got from the Red Sox should work to make everyone happy-- hopefully he heals well and hits like he has the last three years.
  3. Generally, when you have a player who was one of the top 5 hitters in baseball in 2012, I think its really pointless to worry about giving him a two year contract. Worst case scenario, the Rangers or Yankees sign him. Best case scenario, they sign him for 1/14, he's pissy about the short term deal, and hurts the clubhouse culture instead of providing the leadership that the team needs. But then what? The team goes into 2014, and they have the same problem they have the last five years. They have no way of replacing his offensive production, or his PR impact. The three killer B's and the Ryans are either still developing in the minors, or struggling with the challenges of facing MLB pitching. The only scenarios where they don't re-sign him in 2014 are if he's completely done, and I don't think that will be the case here.
  4. Ortiz has had a history of bitching and whining about his contract. They probably figured that he's the face of the franchise and it wasn't worth arguing about. They were in a hole... they had been very cheap at the deadline by dumping all those contracts, and if they didn't give back to their most iconic fan favorite player, it would have been disastrous to PR.
  5. It did seem a little awkward. I don't really understand why he wouldn't like Bradley though... Ellsbury wants his money, and Bradley is next in line-- he isn't going to lose his spot unless he leaves.
  6. Christian Vazquez continues to impress with his glove. I'd love to see him push Salty to first base or something.
  7. You essentially took his point, and changed the pitches around. Definitely plagiarism--if you're still in school or an academic setting, I seriously recommend reading up on how to paraphrase. That being said, nobody gives a f*** here, and I was just joking around. Absolutely no offense meant whatsoever.
  8. Jeff Passan, I didn't know you posted here. I read your article on yahoo this morning.
  9. Is it just me, or does the offseason seem to get longer every year?
  10. I'm fine with a 12 person league if we can find another.
  11. Napoli could end up being the bargain of the offseason.
  12. Its always a bad sign when players announce retirement in advance. They usually end up getting hurt and give up. I wonder if he will get the farewell tour treatment like Chipper. Maybe an honorary bullpen band spoon from the Sox? http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/ranking-chipper-jones-retirement-gifts-far-172941742--mlb.html
  13. Also, Keith Law's list Webster -- 63 Lee -- 67
  14. Maybe at the time of the trade, Lee was more valuable, but in 2013, Webster has been better ranked by most of the top prospect rankings. MLB's 2013 prospect rankings Webster-- #71 Lee-- #78. Baseball Prospectus's 2013 prospect rankings Webster -- #69 Lee-- #87 Baseball America's 2013 prospect rankings Webster -- #49 Lee-- not listed.
  15. Who is the baggage? They got rid of their biggest offender in Escobar, and avoided the Marlin's biggest malcontent in Hanley. Sure, Josh Johnson's health is a concern, but he came off a solid season, and Cabrera served his time as gracefully as possible.
  16. In 2011, the Marlins were a 72 win team, who added Reyes, and Buerhle. In 2012, the Jays were a 73 win team, who added Reyes, Buerhle, Johnson, Dickey, Cabrera. They also will likely have full seasons of guys like Lawrie, Bautista and Santos. This team is significantly more talented than the 2012 Marlins. They've also seen some very good players leave their division this offseason.
  17. Here's the current list of players the Yankees have either lost in the offseason, or will lose significant time from: Swisher Granderson A-rod Martin Texeira Ibanez Chavez Jones Soriano I don't understand why people are so keen on crowning them division champs already. The Jays should be able to walk away with it this year.
  18. Don't be surprised to see Lars Anderson playing some first base in Yankee Stadium this year
  19. Texeira to miss 8-10 weeks. Source, Jack Curry from YES.
  20. Just to be clear this is what the Yankee lineup looks like without Tex. Jeter Ichiro Gardner Cano Youkilis Nunez Hafner Mesa Stewart
  21. Really unfortunate situation. Hopefully he'll be able to live a normal life from here on out.
  22. Well, they did finish in last place in 1990. Who knows, miracles do happen.
  23. His groundball numbers make him interesting. Much moreso than Lackey.
  24. We're talking about a guy whose last three season ERAs were 4.59, 4.75 and 4.92, and broken the 180 inning mark once in his career. 5 K/9, 6 IP per outing. He's a number 6 starter on a playoff team, maybe a #4/5 on the Red Sox. Bailey needs to show that he's healthy and effective obviously, but if he does that, I don't see their values being significantly different.
  25. Detroit is looking for a closer, and it doesn't seem like Texas has one to spare. Jay Frasor has some experience, but I doubt he'd be what the Tigers are looking for. I also wonder if Detroit sees the Rangers as more of a threat going into 2013 than the Red Sox, and might not be willing to deal to another contender.
