  1. The worst part is that the Yankees will have a 7 million dollar player on their roster, and they'll probably have to play him, even if his stats suffer.
  2. I want to pose a general question out there to the posters on here who believe that the Red Sox will not make the playoffs. How does having an elite defense behind the pitching staff affect your stance on the team? Replacing Gomes and Drew with Bradley and Iggy could be a big boost to the defense, albeit a hit to the offense in places where most of us assumed there would be holes already.
  3. The Brewers get Lohse. That first rounder is going to hurt, but the Brewers could be competitive again this year.
  4. The Yankees have money to burn. When you look at Arod's deal, you see them overpaying for a guy who just earned the AL MVP, with a 1.067 OPS season and spitting in the face of the Red Sox at the same time. Its one thing to overpay for an elite player, but to overpay for a guy like Vernon Wells? He just plain sucks.
  5. Can someone tell me what is with Vernon Wells that makes GMs lose their minds? First the Blue Jays with the awful contract, then the Angels actually took the contract, and now the Yankees. I can't remember the last time the Yankees made a move that looked awful before it even happened.
  6. This is a good point. Lots of GMs make rash moves, trading away elite prospects in order to get talent into their organization, and try to keep their own jobs. I'd rather lose one year of Bradley than see them trade him away for mediocre talent in desperation.
  7. Well, at this point on, no one should be bitching about Gomes.
  8. Vernon Wells to the Yanks, who have to pay 2/8. Man, they must really regret passing on Hairston.
  9. Like Dice-k?
  10. More reports that Boras still looking for 14-15 annually. Seriously bro, lay off the crack pipe and get Lohse a job before midseason.
  11. Did anyone read the article with John Henry the other day? He says that Larry Lucchino "revolutionized the game" and his career "requires a hall of fame election". Ew.
  12. The MLB, MiLB, and NPB all have spring training in March. Sure, some teams have more pride, and play harder, but their opponents aren't at their best. What's even worse, is that some of their own players aren't even at their best yet because of the time in the season. Its like fighting Rocky before he goes through the training montage.
  13. I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing that the DR, or other countries celebrate the way they do. But it is important that they put things into perspective, and realize that the tournament is really just extended spring training. Winning the WBC is the equivalent of winning the mayor's cup-- its kind of fun, but the teams involved aren't necessarily the best teams out there.
  14. Time for some heavy duty draft research. Bring it.
  15. I've probably been around a 3 or 4 lately, leaning on 3.
  16. The two important things to note about this team is that it is much stronger against left handed pitchers than right handed ones, and that this division's best pitchers are left handed. I also think that this group of players are going to be more effective in that they are more platoon-heavy than recent teams, which isn't something the coaching staff is nearly as concerned about in ST.
  17. Cherrington stated this very well. It means Cherrington can bring him back down once Ortiz returns and Gomes needs a spot-- since he won't platoon Bradley.
  18. No problem at all.
  19. I hadn't thought about it before, but that's a pretty amazing defense. Iggy, Pedroia, Bradley, Ells, Vic, Ross, Middlebrooks. The only weak link in the group would be Napoli.
  20. Cole Hamels had a solid game. Its a shame the Phillies decided to spend their entire bullpen budget on one guy.
  21. Edit: This is totally not a game thread. MVP confused me. Oops!
  22. Is it just me, or do interviewers always ask Napoli about his hip, and his response is always "Honestly, my hip doesn't hurt. Really. Yes, really. I'm not lying to you. Seriously". Part of me wonders if maybe someone spilled coffee on his MRI results
  23. Part of it isn't the ownership's fault. Since the last time the Red Sox won the WS, Boston has seen two NBA Finals, two super Bowls, and a Stanley Cup. Competing with that kind of success is very difficult, even with the resources this team has.
  24. Who on earth plays Iglesias deep?
  25. My impression around here is more of apathy. Boston likes to follow winners, and the Red Sox haven't been lately. When there is an actual reaction, it isn't about the team being cheap, its about the team being unlikeable, and poorly managed.
