  1. Can't knock Papi. It's taken too long, but he has come back with a bang--to the relief of the management, who are paying him a fortune the next 2 years just to swing a bat.
  2. We don't have all the facts, but in the clash of Cherington vs Valentine's personnel views, V was probably right. But Ben is Henry's fair-haired boy, so V didn't get what he wanted. That meant Iggy and Lav went to Pawtucket and Bard moved to starter. I suspect Farrell is more of an insider than V was, so he has more leverage. He may well wind up being the next Red Sox GM.
  3. Cherington's worst decision was probably moving Bard to starter--so he could save money by not signing another starter. What he wound up doing was depriving the Red Sox of one of the best setup guys in baseball, and perhaps permanently damaging his career. It was a blatant case of mismanagement that higher ups often get away with.
  4. Pujols keeps threatening to decline with all these slow starts. We'll see if he can pull out of it this season. The Angels are walking on thin ice with some of these humungous contracts. But they aren't worrying since Fox Sports West is paying for it. As for Hamilton, I think there's something to be said about avoiding long term contracts to over-30 players. In fact, I would avoid 3 year contracts to over 30 players--which the Red Sox should have avoided. But then they are riding high right now, so why be concerned.
  5. Other than his big mouth, I wouldn't attach any other blame to him--he came into a no-win situation for him. He had no organizational support--Lucchino left him hanging in the breeze. He did walk away with considerable Red Sox treasure.
  6. Almost a must sweep against this team. You figure the East will not be so easy to beat. You have to dominate the lesser teams like the Yankees always do. Right now, all the starters are clicking and keeping them in games. The Yankees are amazing right now with all their old castoffs hitting way over their heads. Even Overbay got into the act today.
  7. They have this problem every year using 3-4 RPs per game. The starters have to go deeper, or the relievers need to pitch 2 innings.
  8. They've got guys in Pawtucket who can fill holes--but their regimen is a starter is a starter, and a reliever is a reliever--except , of course, for Bard.
  9. Bard may have confidence issues. He's a head case. They erred badly changing his role.
  10. The party has ended. The Toronto hitters are heating up. The Yankees keep pulling games out of their asses with castoffs hitting like Ruth-Gehrig. On the road again.
  11. One bleach blonde is as good as another.
  12. Farrell is MOY right now--but it's early.
  13. They keep throwing this guy out there and he keeps giving up runs. ERA 5.6.
  14. Farrell was quoted as saying the kid has expanded his strike zone, and is swinging at bad pitches. What most people have figured out by now.
  15. MBrooks will have to hit this weekend, or he should be benched. He's making too many outs in the middle of that lineup. And Ciriaco is a decent enough replacement for awhile. I would not be shocked if MBrooks winds up in Pawtucket for a short stay. Drew has a longer leash because of his injury--and of course his salary. Salary is a big deal with the Red Sox--they play the salary, not the ability. My guess is Iglesias will get another shot by mid-season if he continues to hit and Drew slumps.
  16. I recall early on in pre-season I said the Red Sox should try to get Stanton for whatever it takes. But to be honest, I don't know if Stanton would make as much of a difference as a couple of stud starters like Webster and somebody else out of their farm system. Teams win these days on good role players and strong pitching--without much regard to payroll. The Red Sox key is to work hard to constantly upgrade the pitching. The Angels have a lineup full of stars, but their pitching is mediocre, which accounts for their current mediocre standing.
  17. Bringing up Wright over Webster was an example of how this organization thinks. They pigeon-hole pitchers--instead of bringing up the best guy. They wanted a middle relief type, so they figured on Wright--even though he is also a starter but not nearly as ready for the big leagues as Webster. The result in a game was predictable. They did bring up Webster for a start, and he was successful. Hopefully he'll get another start Sunday. If he's successful again, he may still be blocked by lesser pitchers. The organization shows a certain regimentation on pitching that may be counterproductive, and could contribute to underachieving performance in recent years. I'm hoping Farrell will correct some of this--his influence is high right now, maybe as high as it will ever be.
  18. Good to see they dumped Aceves. That shows there is urgency in the organization--they don't want to lose the momentum they've generated early in the season. Urgency is something that has been sadly lacking in this organization the last couple years. Let's hope they stay flexible in injecting young talent when the old talent isn't doing the job. Especially the pitching. That means Webster has to get a serious shot--starting Sunday. Rushing Lackey could be disastrous--his biceps may be trying to tell him something. Lavarnway? I doubt it's for the catching. Probably for a game or two--for the RHd bat. He has yet to show he can hit ML pitching. MBrooks looks like he needs a couple games off--that's what Ciriaco is for.
  19. The kind of teams the Yankees feast on. And the Red Sox MUST feast on if they are to do anything in the AL east this season.
  20. Just noticing the production the Yankees are getting from the likes of Hefner, Youkilis, Wells, Ichiro, Pettite, etc. How are they doing it? How can Pettite be pitching like a Superman at 40+yo? How can castoffs like Wells and Hefner suddenly turn into gold? Plus Youkilis, who the W Sx didn't want for his $11 mil option. I don't know. But I know Pettite has used angel dust in the past. So did Colon when he pitched in NY--and then Oakland. You have to wonder if Steinbrenner didn't discover Ponce de Leon's "fountain of youth" near Tampa at some point. It's still early, of course, and April can be a strange month. I'll say it's strange.
  21. A lot of people think they should have kept Hill and not Miller. Hill is pitching well in Cleveland. But Hill can't stay off the DL--at least he couldn't in Boston. And the FO is worried the Yankees will grab Miller if they release him, and turn him into Randy Johnson. Morales and Breslow down is a real problem. They have 3 BP guys down.
  22. I tweeted MBrooks to make like Ted Williams at the plate. Be patient. be fussy. swing only at strikes. get walks. easy to say, but you have to know the strike zone and be focussed.
  23. I bet Stanton will get dealt soon. I doubt it will be Boston. They have stuffed their lineup so full of salary short term there is no place for him. And none of those FAs they signed are worth much in trade. It makes little sense to trade their best prospect pitcher, since pitching is what they need to have any chance in the AL East. Teams live or die with their pitching in this division. Their pitching is injury prone, and they don't have enough depth to be dealing any of their top pitching prospects.
  24. I read they are trying to decide on Webster or Aceves to start on Sunday. Must be a joke there somewhere.
