That's why the Toronto players--or the umpires--had no comment. The culprit is Morris. He knew damn well what the real story was, and tried to make it into something else. So did Harold Reynolds and the rest of those media types who tried to pass this off as "cheating." The real story here is why Morris et al did what they did. Red Sox haters. Include the Boston Globe, owned by the NY Times.

    There is no excuse for not hitting in Fenway against this Minnesota team. One of the worst pitching teams in baseball. Farrell figured they'd start hitting again at home. Not yet. Maybe it's good MBrooks gets some time off. Maybe he needs some AAA time to get his batting eye back. I'd like to see Iggy up and Drew playing 3B. Iggy might give them a spark--in one way or another. And Drew has gotten hot. You have to make bold moves if you want to stay in the hunt. They seemed to have gotten the message, bringing up Webster and Lav. I would send MB down and bring up Iggy to play SS a few games. He's in a funk and needs stroking--not benching. The kid can play.

    The media isn't just NY in the voting. Most are the Peoria writers who could care less about network TV. There are enough of them to keep the juicers out of the HOF. If only for their persistent lying on the issue.

    He and Manny won't get in because of HGH or steroids. They were all taking them 10 years ago. Besides, it's much tougher for a DH to get in. And Ortiz had a couple bad years a couple years ago, which doesn't help as well. Couldn't hit lefties. Is there a test yet for HGH? I suspect some are taking HGH or something else right now that isn't tested. There is too much money at stake not to. Pretty obvious. Heck, I would, as long as there were no serious side effects.

    Move Drew over to 3B and bring up Iggy to play SS. The kid is in a funk in Pawtucket. Does everything right in Boston and still loses to the money. MBrooks might need a stint in AAA to get his batting eye back.

    I see the Globe is still trying to keep this "cheating" non-story alive. Anything for a little controversy. Some talk today his arm wasn't "shiny" last night. Could be Buchholz is just playing games. Leiter said on MLB TV he just grooved a couple pitches last night for the runs. Otherwise looked fine. Good stuff. The only people who should be concerned are the umpires. It's their call. And so far, they have seen nothing. So what's the big deal, media?

    Tonite, Breslow heats up again, and has nothing. They were better off pitching him 2 innings last night and somebody else tonite--one fewer heatup. He has just come off the DL. Speier says he was throwing 88 tonite.

    Agree. They might not even go $13 mil. not with Bradley in the wings, and Vic on board for 3 yrs. Also, Ells doesn't walk enough to be a top flight leadoff hitter.

    Still too early to tell. He hasn't shown the power yet again to get the big bucks. It's a mystery what happened to it. Maybe they discontinued his brand of spinach.

    The tweeteybird says Webster is at Fenway, will probably start Wed. Farrell says Tazawa is closing for now.

    They have plenty of arms, even with the injuries, but you can't throw 'em out there 1 per inning losing 8-1, or even 5-1. Especially if you're playing 7 games in 7 days. You look up in a 4-3 or 4-4 game, you got nobody good when you need them. How did Farrell get to this? Well, most all managers have the same regimen these days. 3-4 bullpen guys per game. But a few of them are a bit more flexible than that. They will throw a guy out there for 2-3 innings if he's going good--to save the bullpen. Bochy, Showalter, Madden. Some of the better managers. That's the way it used to be in baseball, when long relief was a reality and starters had to earn starting through the bullpen. That's not the way the Red Sox do things anymore, to their detriment.

    At this point, Farrell should be doubting the wisdom of one reliever per inning. By using 3-4 relievers per game, he depletes his bullpen quickly if he has 3-4 consecutive games with no days off. Combined with two injury-prone closers and other relievers rehabbing, his regimen has resulted in the two Japanese pitchers being overworked. Maybe his best relievers, who were needlessly used in games when they were far behind (8-1 in Texas comes to mind). Farrell needs to manage the bullpen better.

    I said last night why take Breslow out? Pitch him in the 9th. Keep Hanrahan warm. Screw the save routine. Maybe Farrell thinks so, now, too. That's what makes great managers--to know when to go against the grain.

    Buchholz ought to sue those announcers in Toronto for defamation of character. The Canadian liability laws are different from ours---the media doesn't have the 1st amendment to hide behind.

    Bring Breslow right back in the 9th, Farrell. Screw this save crap. Keep Hanrahan warm.

    2 Toronto announcers from high above the field accuse Buchholz of cheating. Nobody on the field notices. The media rushes to judgement the next day, as if it were an actual event. The Globe highlights the story. Next thing you know there is "scrutiny" of Buchholz by MLB and the umps tonite. On what basis? Because of two biased Toronto announcers with an agenda? If I were Buchholz, I would sue those two guys in Toronto. Canada's liability laws don't allow the media to get away with what they get away with in this country. Here they holler 1st amendment.

    Bailey's on the DL again. Hope that MRI machine didn't fall on his big toe.

    Gotta love that Popovich. He is to Red Auerbach what Doc Rivers will never be. Did that "cheater" media horsecrap rattle Buchholz tonite? That was the intention.

    The FO has to move on Webster soon. The kid is much better than half their starting rotation. There is a sense of urgency being at the top of the pack with nowhere to go but down.

    Lav is more agile than Salty behind the plate, but he has looked tentative so far against ML pitching. Something to prove there, but he ain't gonna prove it in Pawtucket. If Olney is right about Salty, it looks like they might be ready to break the umbilical cord. And there has been a vested FO interest in Salty, since the same bunch traded for him. I like the kid, but his size reduces his agility behind HP, and he doesn't frame pitches well. The latter should have been corrected by now.

    They could easily improve their pitching bringing Webster up to start, and putting Doubront or Lackey in the BP--in long relief. That would take the pressure off the Japanese guys. Mortenson should be cut--they keep him because he's out of options. It's called beancounting. Breslow will help--finally. Morales is still invisible. Bailey and Hanrahan can't seem to stay healthy--simultaneously. One or the other is always hurt. The other thing is the lineup: they started the season on the road with a speed-defense lineup which was successful. But now they seem to have reverted to the old one-dimensional power lineup which doesn't hit on the road. That puts pressure on the pitching.

    The game was lost purely in how the BP was handled--changing relievers too frequently until only the unreliable ones are left. These are the kinds of close games you want your best relievers fresh and ready to pitch in the late innings. That means the starters can't go less than 6 innings, and relievers have to go more than one inning. If not, you run out of relievers after 2-3 games. At this rate, those two Japanese pitchers will be burned out by July. Further, the durability of Bailey and Hanrahan is in question.Both never seem to be available at once. Where is Morales? Breslow finally seems ready to pitch. What they should have done was plug Webster in the rotation and put Lackey or Doubront in the BP. But the FO is very slow to make these kinds of changes when they're needed. Instead they keep getting burned by unreliable guys like Mortenson because he has no options left. His lack of options is costing them wins.
