  1. Looks like Lackey is taking a serious shot at being the #3 starter. Dempster is pitching like a lot of people thought he would--he sucks. The FO threw a lot of money around pre-season--or should I say wasted a lot of money--because it was there to spend. Victorino used to be a nice player, but I'm afraid he too is on the downside--can't stay healthy at age 32. Keep your fingers crossed on Napoli. Drew is another who will probably guarantee Iggy some time at SS.
  2. Iggy batting .435 with Red Sox after tonite, Drew batting .205.
  3. If Lackey can pitch like this consistently, and Lester and Buchholz stay sharp, they will stay in the hunt.
  4. Oddly enough, they aren't losing much offensively at 3B, the way Middlebrooks has been hitting. Though he has had some 2 hit games recently. Iggy can run, though, and he has to get on base and use his speed.
  5. Iggy up, playing 3B tonite. The kid has played about 2 games in the minors at 3B, and now he has to play there at Fenway. Life just ain't fair. Right, Daniel Bard?
  6. Iggy playing 3B tonite. I hope this isn't Daniel Bard all over again. The more sensible thing is to put Drew at 3B, Iggy at SS. If Iggy blows it at 3B, it could hurt him more than help. He's a model great field, no hit SS, who could be another Aparicio in a few years.
  7. The first 3 should be batting 1-3. They will score more runs that way. It isn't clear to me who is controlling the batting order: Farrell or the FO. In Boston, you just don't know. My impression is the FO has a heavy play on the field.
  8. If the Sox falter this year, it will be because of their weak 3,4 and 5 starters. Dempster was a bad sign. There's still hope in Lackey, or one of the prospects. The other thing disturbing to me is the one dimensionality of their lineup, especially when Vic is out. Last night, the defense lacked range. And with Ells struggling, there is no base running movement in the lineup. Pedroia is hitting out of position in the 3 hole, trying to play the role of slugger. Farrell's weak spot is his handling of the top of the lineup.
  9. Somebody mentioned Nava. He could be their best pure hitter right now. It might take them a few more months to notice. At least Farrell has him high in the batting order. Ells badly needs to get out of that leadoff slot. The lineup they had tonite was slow in the field. Drew hardly moved on that 1st inning ground single by Kipnis. Iggy might have had a shot at it. Stubbs blooper behind 1B to score the first run should have been Napoli's ball, but he isn't mobile enough to make that play. Pedey was shading too close to 2B with the RHD hitter up to get over fast enough to the foul line. And Carp almost missed a routine fly in LF. Speed and defense are important, and aren't being utilized or emphasized enough on this team right now. They look like last years' team, swinging from their heels. Except for the great pitching by Buchholz and Lester, they might be a lot closer to .500, or below it.
  10. This team plays at home like it doesn't want to sell tickets.Dempster is looking like Dumpster. Mortenson must be dating the bosses daughter. Tazawa and Breslow are much too important to be used in blowouts. What else? Ellsbury looked lost in that 1st at bat. He has problems that batting leadoff game after game isn't going to cure. I suspect Tito is doing well in Cleveland because he has his bench coach back (now his 3B coach). Things went to pot for him in Boston when Mills left. Did you see that blonde hottie sitting in the seat in the stands right next to Tito in the dugout?
  11. Scutaro moved to 2B in the NL. He is not a SS over there. At his age, he lacks the range. In Boston, there is a preference for offense over defense, so he plays SS. He's much better at 2B range-wise, and can hit some.
  12. coach brainfarted leaving Hibbert on the bench on OT.
  13. Farrell pissing against the wind again--batting Ells leadoff.
  14. They are playing a lot of guys who should be DHs. That's one of their problems.
  15. The problem at SS is the way the FO handled it. Iggy surprised everybody with a strong start, fielding and hitting, and the team was winning. They pronounced that doesn't make any difference-- when the money comes back, we play the money. Drew comes back, Iggy goes to AAA, and Drew doesn't hit a lick for 3 weeks. Nothing like fixing what ain't broke. Iggy goes into a funk at Pawtucket, and is finally coming out of it--maybe. They should have sat Drew on the bench and made him earn his job again. The FO isn't perfect at handling youngsters. And they have kept the Red Sox a mature moneyed team, despite all their talk about prospects. If there's an injury, they might get a quick look.
  16. Farrell has to realize he's in a tough division, where every win is important. That means no player is special. Ells should have been moved to 9th a week ago. Tito did it in '09, and it worked. Take the pressure off the kid, who is trying to pull everything. And increase their run production, which is hurting right now. You have to wonder about Farrell. He improves the pitching, but he persists in not doing the obvious in the batting order with the team slumping.
  17. Farrell has to fix the top of the order. Too many outs up there.
  18. That's the reason I read tonite in the Globe. They are grooming him for a utility role at SS,3B and 2B. Which means he'll probably be brought up this season. I think they are trying to find a way to bring him up--he did a very good job for them starting the season--better than expected. Besides, they are paying him $2.5 million.
  19. They are still looking for a #3 starter who can give them consistent quality starts like Lester and Buchholz. They won't go far until they find one. They aren't the Yankees, who keep pulling games out of their asses.
  20. Farrell says he is sticking with Ells at leadoff. The question is why? Get the kid out of there, and it might help him. It apparently did in '09.
  21. Farrell persists with Ells batting leadoff. That doesn't help their run production. I see Tito is off to a great start in Cleveland. A hint maybe his problems in Boston was the FO pulling the strings. Always thought they declined when they lost Hoyer and Byrnes, and laid off James and the other consultants. That was '08 or '09. Lost Manny about then, too.
  22. Iggy is playing 3B today in Pawtucket. There must be a good reason hiding somewhere. Maybe they are trying to keep his bat in the lineup. They'll screw him up yet.
  23. I see they have Iggy playing 3B today in Pawtucket. I guess they are trying to keep his bat in the lineup. LOL.
  24. Every pitcher has a bad game. Even the media's choice, Rivera, blows saves. Lester is entitled to an off day. So is Webster, by the way. That kid should have been given another start. The FO has a very short leash on prospects. Farrell has to drop Ells in the batting order. It's embarrassing. The kid is making way too many outs to bat leadoff. It's killing their offense.
