  1. That HR Nap hit over the Red Sox BP was a huge blast for a RHd hitter. Haven't seen too many like that over the years. Skowron could do it. That other Yankee guy later who hit to the opposite field a lot--can't remember his name.
  2. Phils were lucky on Nava. Salty framed better 2nd inning. Pedey as good as they come. Great stop on the DP.
  3. Did you watch Salty that inning? Framed every pitch right down the middle --on the lower half of the plate. That's meat for a LHd hitter like Rollins who nearly hit it out. Aveces got Howard on off-speed stuff. Good pitching. But Salty doesn't frame the corners--the pitcher throws right to his glove in the middle, the hitter hits the piss out of it--like Rollins just did.
  4. I like the lineup the Sox opened the season with. Except for Papi at DH. They had a nice blend of hitting, speed and defense. Bradley ultimately played himself back to AAA, but maybe he'll be back soon. Nava, however, has emerged, and should be a fixture in the OF. That makes Vic or Ells expendable--maybe--at some point in the season. Vic is untradeable with his contract, so Ells is the one. They kind of screwed themselves with these big FA contracts. Even for a year or 2 or 3. These guys are untradeable making $13 mil. Even Drew making $10 mil. The one good deal was Napoli--and they were saved by his hip.But kids like Bradley and Iglesias are coming along faster than expected. Maybe Webster and DeLaRosa as well. Dempster right now looks like a bad sign for the money.
  5. If you're wondering if the Phillies lucked out on Papelbon, they had Grilli in the minors last year, and let him go to the Pirates. They could have saved themselves a bundle if they looked at Grilli a bit more closely. He wasn't doing that well, but maybe he needed a tweak. These FOs are far from perfect. I wonder how long Amaro's leash is.
  6. Too bad Buchholz has to miss a turn. He could have kept the momentum. Now they have to depend on somebody who is a questionmark.
  7. Iggy is a spark in that lineup--getting on base. The kid is really overachieving. I like the effort.
  8. that kid Iggy is playing over his head--getting on base.
  9. great win for the Sox.
  10. Lefties like Doubront are always given a long leash.
  11. I wouldn't deal for Stanton. I would rather have another ace pitcher.
  12. The key is what are you doing for me right now. Drew hasn't had a good year for several years--before his ankle injury. Iggy doesn't have enough at bats to draw any conclusions. He's riding high right now.
  13. They are stuck with Drew right now. Nobody else will pay him $10 mil. From what I've seen, he's pretty slow getting to the ball. Iglesias is more the classic SS defensively. They won't improve their defense unless they accept a little less offense at a defensive position.
  14. Drew has limited range. He may have slowed up a bit after the ankle injury.
  15. I don't think their FO agrees with you. They place more emphasis on offense at every position, which I think is a mistake. They look at Drew's career stats. That's what they go by. Plus the big salary he's getting. They are biased toward veterans over prospects. They went with Bradley and Iggy early because was Bradley was a draw and Drew was hurt. I think politics sometimes interferes with fielding the best team to win. That's true of a lot of organizations--but never the Yankees.
  16. Tito was the same. That's why I suspect the FO is calling the shots. You never want to take a guy out when he going good. That includes pitching. They sent Iggy down when he was doing well. How would you feel if it was you? It's just a piss-poor way of handling a young player. That's why I think their FO sucks. Speier is doing a series at WEEI on the Red Sox organization. He says Henry is a very passive, hands-off guy. Werner has no role whatsoever--has a small stake in the team. Maybe 10%. Henry isn't even a majority owner at 40%. That leaves LL and the FO to run the team. And Lucchino has been mainly selling tickets since Epstein took off his gorilla suit and demanded more team control. So the FO has been pretty much running the show for quite awhile, even though Henry fired Tito and Epstein last year. He had to do something because of the collapse.
  17. More than half the hits from the bottom two hitters in the lineup--bench guys. They should be killing Cleveland pitching in Fenway. Just not hitting right now. But a win is a win is a win. And Cleveland is playing good ball right now. One sportswriter pointed out that with Iggy and Drew in the lineup, it made more sense for Iggy to play SS than 3b. They solved that problem today.
  18. Iggy made an out. How is that possible?
  19. The current Ellsbury will not be re-signed. They didn't sign Bourne, and they have Bradley waiting in the wings. If Bradley continues to impress in Pawtucket, Ells might get traded by the deadline. Maybe they are trying to boost his trade value right now batting him leadoff.
  20. Vic isn't a high OBP guy, either. Though better than Ells right now. Farrell, assuming he's making up the lineup, seems to prefer speed to on base% at the top. I think it has to be costing them runs--making so many outs at the top. That's not consistent with their stated OBP priorities.
  21. Ells still batting leadoff. Gomes 2nd? Farrell's lineups aren't right. He doesn't seem to have a handle on the top of the order.
  22. I read the medicals on him suggested elbow issues. Maybe down the line? don't recall. It made a long term deal risky, but teams do funny things in the free agent scramble.
  23. Earning his pay--finally. Can't believe they gave this guy a big contract knowing he had elbow issues. They must be swimming in money. If the Lack is back, he, Lester and Buchholz give them a formidable big 3 in the rotation. As good as any in the league.
  24. Iggy won't be the first kid to hit .200 in AAA and .400 in the Show.
  25. At this point, Nava-1, Pedey-2, Papi-3 is almost a no brainer in the batting order. Papi is their best hitter. Nava and Pedey their on base guys. The 1-2 top of the order as it stands is hurting their run production. Can't understand the obstinacy of Farrell on this, unless it's out of his hands.
