  1. Bard seems destined for the closer role. He hasn't opened eyes yet as a starter. OK but not great. If Cook shows anything his start tommorrow, he and Dice-K could be Bard's ticket to the bullpen. The pitching has to improve, or this club will never get off .500.
  2. Old saying from the old Mayflower donut shop: As you wander your way through life, Whatever be your goal, Keep your eye upon the donut, And not upon the hole. The Globe keeps trying to find the holes.
  3. Well, injuries aren't confined to the Red Sox. Even the Yankees get them. Steinbrenner must have broken a few chairs in his office today. But he was the guy who wanted to pay Soriano $13 mil a year to set up. Now he gets his moneys' worth. Maybe they will move Soriano to starter? No. That's the Red Sox and Bard.
  4. The front office has a history of failure at SS since Nomar. And they are still failing.
  5. The deal that brought Epstein down to earth.
  6. Doubt he's happy about shifting back to 3B so late after establishing himself as an all-star at 1B.
  7. Before they ship Youk out, they better find another RHd power hitter. They screwed themselves getting rid of Beltre--and Bay before him. You have to wonder what Bay would have done if he stayed in Boston. But I doubt we know the whole story there. The guy collapsed in NY. If Middlebrooks shows some thump, then they don't pick up Youks' $13 mil option. That's clear. So they better play Middlebrooks plenty to see what he can do.
  8. Hohler should graduate and come up with some dirt on the Yankees. He's had enough experience with the Red Sox. What are they trying to say? That they give away free tickets? LOL. By the way, I learned that the Scranton Yankees' stadium is being upgraded this year with $30 mil--partly from the taxpayers. How do the Yankees get away with funding their new Yankee stadium and now their AAA stadium with taxpayer money? The Marlins got the same deal in Miami--by greasing the pols down there. Not a peep from the media about any of this. Why bother when you can pick on the Red Sox.
  9. This team doesn't have the guns right now to offset the mediocre pitching.
  10. Not a great situation for a kid with few at bats.
  11. Balfour goes out in a non-save situation. That's when closers often s*** the bed.
  12. It's all about $$$. Dice-K makes the big bucks. He starts. Rightfully, he should be in the bullpen right now, until he is ready to start. Same for Buchholz, who clearly wasn't ready to be no.3 starter in April. Too bad the Red Sox front office has such a sharp line between starters and relievers. One of their errors they get away with. I'm not happy with them the last few years. And the same guys are still there, except for Epstein. I don't think much has changed, except Henry has taken the money away from them.
  13. LaRussa won his first title with the As and converted Eck to closer. Dick Williams also managed the As to a title --maybe earlier--after he left the Red Sox. The As were a pretty dominant team in those days. Only Connie Mack and John McGraw had more lifetime wins than LaRussa, who managed the White Sox, As and Cardinals. He was actually fired by the White Sox two years after he won a division title there. Big mistake. He has a law doctorate degree. A few brains doesn't hurt in the dugout.
  14. The Hawk played for the Sox in '67. He and Tony C had a pad off Coolidge Corner in Brookline called Champion Court. How do I know that?
  15. Wasn't it LaRussa? He managed the As in those days.
  16. Interesting comparsion. Eck was a top starter, then declined and moved to the bullpen where he became a HOF closer. As I recall, he declined as a starter in Boston and they traded him. He was made a closer in Oakland? and the rest is history. I believe he had a drinking problem in Boston, which may have been a factor. Another example was Smoltz. He wasn't in decline as a starter, but was converted to closer--successfully.
  17. I would agree with you 20 years ago when starters completed games and the bullpen was less important. It really depends on how important you make the bullpen. The last couple of games, since the Doubront mistake, Bobby has been extending the starters beyond 6 innings and 100 pitches. That takes the heat off the bullpen. But closers are made to be important. They can win or lose a game in the 9th inning, so you have to have a reliable one. Leyland has blown 2 wins for Verlander by taking him out after 8innings with a lead. Fixing what wasn't broke. I say make the starters more important --again.
  18. Valentine seems to be extending his starters. Wonder if he needed permission from the front office?
  19. Bard has been OK so far as a starter. But without a closer, he probably belongs in the bullpen as the anchor. They have other alternatives for starters. Aceves has 5 saves as a closer so far, but a 12.00 ERA. Saves can be lisleading. My guess is Bard closes when Dice-K is ready to start.
  20. The Sox are 10-10. The Angels are 7-14. Things could be a lot worse.
  21. Now there's a guy who reads Cafardo. Spot on about Tazawa. Saw him his first two appearances, and he looked sharp. Much MUCH better than Buchholz, the meatball artist, whom he replaced. I don't know what the hell the Sox coaches are looking at. Buchholz sucks. He starts. Tazawa looks sharp. He mops up. Politics. Buchholz should be in the bullpen, getting his arm back in shape. That's why I say the front office sucks on pitching. They draw a sharp line between starters and relievers. BS.
  22. Seems like the front office will do anything to keep Bard a starter. They must feel they will look bad if they do the sensible thing--plug the closer hole with him. Alex Wilson is an unknown. The way closers are used, you have to value their role. They can easily cost you games.
