    12-1 game, Bard goes 6 ,97 pitches. V uses 3 more pitchers to finish the game. One per inning. Which is why the Red Sox burn out their bullpen every year. V handles pitching no different than Tito. That tells me it's the front office that's handling the pitching. Hard to believe.

    The kid is still on a roll. Doubled to deep center to score 2 today, stole a base. He and Middlebrooks are showing those millionaire stiffs how to play the game.

    Yeah--which is an argument for getting Iggy and Lav up--but the front office hasn't gotten the message yet. They are loading the roster with mediocre veteran players. Nava is a mystery. He's had his chances, but maybe he just needs to play to find himself at this level.

    Cafardo's latest article this morning at the Globe hits the nail on the head about what's wrong with the Red Sox: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2012/05/13/time_for_the_red_sox_to_toughen_up/ If you read this article carefully, you'll see he's saying it's a management problem. All the way up the line. He's also implying there is conflict between the manager and the FO which may be altering Valentine's usual way of doing things. Having a FO which wants control over a manager is not an uncommon problem in MLB these days. As well as the difficulty for a manager to supervise players who make as much as 10X more money than him. Nowhere else in business is that true--to my knowledge. A crazy situation. This article is a real insight into what's wrong with the Red Sox, as seen from someone who is much closer to the scene than the fan. Read it and weep.

    Meanwhile, Nava is hitting .500 since he got called up. The kid has such a good swing, you wonder if he can break out. I said a while ago I thought they should bring the whole Pawtucket team up. Maybe it's not a bad idea. But the front office is content to bring in everybody else's rejects while the prospects "gain experience" in AAA.

    Manny never had a ball hit him on the head. Canseco was almost in the class of Wily Mo Pena. Almost. Wily needed a football helmut to play the outfield. Epstein's finest hour. Manny made the easy ones look hard, but he had a good arm. Remember when he caught a ball going back , jumped into the stands, high-fived a guy, and came back on the field? Amazing.

    Another 4A player they don't need. I'm pulling for Nava--but the dopes will probably ship him down. That kid has a nice swing.

    I don't think it's trades that will do it. I think the problem is about attitude--the management is too easy on the players and not really dedicated to winning. Abraham's article this morning in the Globe about Beckett implies as much. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2012/05/12/for_josh_beckett_issue_is_par_for_the_course/ I never appreciated Tito bailing out of games when the Sox fell behind by 7-8 runs (it happened), nor did I like his "fielders indifference" calls which more than once generated important runs for the opposition in close games. That stuff used to make me wonder about the team's dedication to winning. You don't see that kind of crap on the Yankees. My conclusion last September was the Red Sox were soft--from the owner down. In my view, they are still soft. The owner hasn't changed, and neither really has the management--or the attitude.

    Trading Beckett doesn't make any sense. They don't have anybody to replace Buchholz--much less Beckett. What they need is a new owner to crack the whip. A Steinbrenner to kick some ass. Henry is a wimp.

    Time for Henry to sell the team. They need a bigger shakeup than just unloading Theo and Tito. That means they need new leadership in the front office--a change in philosophy.

    Actually, the problem with Beckett may be symptomatic of a general problem the Red Sox management has with the starting pitching--they baby them. It's a spoiled bunch. When you have problems on a team, it always goes to the top.

Also says Iggy and Lav should be up, too. Says he sees too many 4A players on the team right now. Needs some young blood. That's been a sense for some of us all along. Also says Youks should be used like Michael Young when he gets back--spread around different positions. Says this is not the time to evaluate V. Too many key players injured. What about the Front Office, Nick? Time to go after them? When does Ben's free ride end?

    It must be evident to Lucchino /Henry that they have more fixing to do. Houston--we have a leadership problem.

    Cafardo says tonite the game was a sellout. The Globe had a dozen people there counting the tickets.

    The Sox have signed a ton of trainwrecked pitchers the last couple of years on the cheap. You would think at least one would pan out. They were better off throwing mud against the wall. Go back a few years in their history, and it seems evident the Sox have not placed a high enough priority on pitching. They'll spend $20 mil on Crawford or AdGon, but they won't spend $20 mil on Halladay or Sabathia. Somebody made a point of this in the Globe. And it's a valid one. That's it in a nutshell, folks.

    The Red Sox policy is not to have starters pitch in relief. That's one of their pitching problems. Too sharp a division. Right now, the way they are pitching, they all belong in the bullpen--and Buchholz belongs in AAA. Maybe Beckett was playing golf with Henry.

    Middlebrooks is a breathe of fresh air right now---the spark a lot of us were hoping for from Iggy or Lav. It shows how unpredictable the kids can be, and should be a lesson for the front office. You got to give these kids a chance--they can put some life into a team.
