It's early, folks. Relax. The biggest spenders--the Marlins and the Angels--have started slowly. The big contracts, Reyes and Pujols, have done nothing. Albert will probably come back some, but the stats the past few years suggest he is in decline. He may have Papi disease--and could use better conditioning with some weight loss. Albert should talk to Papi. The Angels may regret not using their TV money on Fielder. Plus they have a logjam with Trumbo and Morales. The biggest problem the Red Sox have right now is getting the front office to do the right things to straighten out the pitching. That may not be as easy as it seems.

I don't think Gonzalez is much improvement over what they have in LHP. I would exclude Thomas, who has shown nothing. Ohlendorf and eventually Hill need to be brought up. Also Cook. The FO has to end it's love affair with Atchison and maybe Albers, too. Bard has to close. Aceves/Morales setup. For 5th starter, my choice would be Tazawa. He was good starting when brought up originally, before his Tommy John. Pitched a good game against the Yankees. Throwing great right now. Cook and Ohlendorf belong in there somewhere replacing some of their current bullpen fodder. Hill is probably a month or 2 away.

Re Tazawa, who looks better than ever after his surgery. With a big lead the other night Tazawa gets to pitch the last 3 innings and gets a save. In a close game with a save situation, the manager yanks him after 2 innings and puts in his closer. If the closer shits the bed, the team loses the game. That's called an unforced error, which is common in baseball these days. The closer has to get his save, or his agent will complain. Right now, Tazawa looks like the best pitcher in the bullpen. Who else do they have in Pawtucket? Cook, for sure. Ohlendorf, too.

Having both Crawford and Ellsbury down for extended time is an unmitigated disaster. They are lucky Epstein gave them Byrd for almost nothing. Though you wonder if Bowden is better than some of the bullpen stiffs they have right now. He wasn't given much of a shot.

They are fools not to move Bard to closer as soon as Bailey went down. Aceves keeps telling them he's not a closer. That FO has a mindset.

I checked the Pawsox roster this morning. They don't have any hot shot outfielders. Lin isn't hitting his weight. The big guns are Gomez-1B and Middlebrooks.

Critical time of game and V blew it by not bringing in the right pitcher. I thought they were getting a better set of brains than this. You got their 2 best LHd hitters coming up with MOB. You bring in your best LHP. That would be Morales. I don't care what inning it is. It's a game situation.

It's ESP-NY. So take it from there. I read they are the highest priced non-premium cable station. They get $5 from every cable bill.

If they let Cook go May 1, it will be a mistake. There are worse pitchers on the Sox pitching staff.

Vs pitcher selection sucks. He's no better a game manager than Tito.

Most of the games were decided by one goal. They'll be tough again next year.

Buck is one of those network announcers who gushes over the Dallas Cowboys, any NY team and apply pie.

They won the Cup last year. Tough to repeat any championship. You have to be lucky.

Things are suddenly looking good. Pineda is out for the season, Buchholz is finally pitching a good game, Aviles looks like the best hitting SS in baseball right now, and nobody has said anything bad about Bobby V today.

Cafardo's latest at the Globe: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2012/04/ask_nick_why_no.html Nick makes a lot of good observations about Bard, Aceves, Morales, Lester, Papi, Middlebrooks, Iggy and Oswalt. Makes you wonder about the pitching decisions being made on the Red Sox. The first question from a reader in California is a puzzle, though. The guy is questioning why upper management doesn't get more of the blame since they control the personnel--hiring and firing? The guy says he doesn't want to hear it's all Bobby Vs fault. So Nick responds by accusing the guy of being unfair to Bobby V! I think he either misread the question or maybe was responding to a different question. Nonetheless, reading Nick's columns, you can't help but think Bobby V doesn't have the team he wanted in spring training and the personnel decisions are being controlled by the front office. That's an upper management problem--Henry/LL.

I checked the Pawsox stats. The big hitters down there right now are Middlebrooks (8 HR, 1.2 OPS) and Gomez (6 HR, 1.1 OPS). Gomez plays 1B.

Is Nava doing well in Pawtucket? That kid is a mystery. Looks like he should be a great hitter. They'll be OK for awhile with Ross, Byrd and Sweeney.

Pap's doin' good in Philly, but so are a bunch of other much cheaper closers. Unfortunately, Ben & Co picked a guy who never saw an injury he could avoid.

Buchholz is an example of a pitcher who has been overly pampered by the Red Sox.

The kid is doing pretty well, but if he signed in Boston you can bet he would be in Pawtucket right now--or maybe AA.
