  1. McDonald looks like he thought he was playing softball. I can't think of too many players who wouldn't have hit that pitch out. So why did Valentine get to a point where he ran out of pitchers and had to forfeit the game? Look at the innings after Buchholz: Miller 1.1, Padilla 1.0, 5 pitchers at 2 innings each. That's 7 pitchers to throw 13 innings, not counting the last inning to McDonald. Funny thing, the Orioles did about the same thing. 20 years ago, a mid-reliever goes at least 3-4 innings, so you don't need to carry 13 pitchers and run out of them in extra innings. Bullpens these days are grossly overused--mainly because pitchers have too many appearances and too few innings/appearance. As Johnny Sain said, half the wear and tear is in the bullpen heatup.
  2. Sure. Easier for Pedey and Papi and AdGon. Ross has some spunk. Sweeney has his limits. The rest are bench players. I'd like to see Lav and Iggy up here along with Middlebrooks.
  3. Middlebrooks hits a salami. That hamstring got better fast. Where is Lavarnway? Let's get some thump up here. And that kid Iglesias to put some dazzle into the defense. The Red Sox are as bland as Ben's personality.
  4. Promote this poster to the majors. Like I said, I'm not sure the front office is for us or against us. They are pig-headed and slow to change. They blew it not making Bard the closer and trading for Gio Gonzalez to start--not Bailey. My guess is Bard is probably a better closer than Bailey. They are also slow to bring up AAA talent with upside. Instead they are content to play a bunch of retreads. This team has no spark--dead in the water.
  5. Yeah--I thought about how the Yankees got away with the same short RF porch in the their new stadium. They put that in the first stadium especially for Babe Ruth (always thought his sale to NY was a setup to showcase NY in the AL). That RF porch has always been their secret weapon. Then Fenway is supposed to be good for RHd hitters. It used to be, but now the big boxes behind home plate have changed the wind currents towards LF.
  6. Has to be something wrong with Buchholz. Like somebody else said, this is becoming a Lackey situation. That answers why they are last in the league in ERA. They keep throwing these guys out there to get bombed. Tazawa pitches good a couple of times out--and he goes back to Pawtucket. Is the front office for us or against us?
  7. Just read this story. I'm not a big fan of the Red Sox management right now (especially after the idiocy of yesterday, leaving Cook in the game with his tendons hanging out--from Salty's quote.) Now, there are a lot of things the Globe could pick on regarding Red Sox management, but this one looks like much ado about nothing. So there are 300 unsold seats out of 37000+ on a given night, and it's declared a sellout. Big deal. They give away more freebies to charities than that. Now if there were 10000 unsold seats out of 37000 on a given night, and it was declared a sellout, that would be a big deal worth writing about. In my view, the story stinks even more than the premise.
  8. I think the Phillies are well off financially with their new park and sellout crowds (we'll let the Globe decide whether they are real sellouts. ) I don't see them giving up any of their big 3. That's their core. They paid a boatload for Pap, so that shows you they can pay. Pitching is their priority. Look at the Nationals. They focussed on pitching and they are on top--for now. The Red Sox are in deep financial trouble with bad signings like Crawford and Lackey. Even AdGon looks like a luxury right now. They will have to shed salary next year. That makes it imperative for them to establish some stars from their crop at Pawtucket--quickly. Something they have been slow in doing.
  9. Youk is a goner. He can't hold up playing 3B and is blocked at 1B and DH in Boston.
  10. Wins isn't the thing anymore. Not when pitchers don't go deep into games. CC gets deep into games and gets more wins than most, but I don't know if he can make it at his age. The guy the Red Sox missed on was Gio Gonzales. They tried to get him with Bailey, but didn't have enough to give. They blew it by focussing on Bailey and not Gio. Bard was the logical choice to succeed Pap, but they wanted him to start. Gio was the better option as 4th starter. The Red Sox front office hasn't made too many good decisions the past few years.
  11. It's horrible they let a guy come out to pitch with a gash that required 13 stitches. Then they leave the guy in there to get bombed. It's a pure case of mismanagement.
  12. It's clear the real problem with the Red Sox is all those empty seats at Fenway.
  13. How many runs did he give up before they took him out? Are they interested in eating innings or winning games? Now there's the question.
  14. V so far is a big disappointment. His field managing is no better than Tito's, and he's a loose cannon with the media--which Tito was not.
  15. Hamels, by the way, will likely stay in Philly. The Phillies aren't about to break up their three aces--about the only thing they have right now--plus Pap. The Yankees would scarf him up first, anyways. A better fit in their RF bandstand park.
  16. When a player goes bad, it's usually the players' fault. When a team goes bad, it's always the management's fault. But they rarely blame themselves.
  17. Yeah. The only people making any money these days--at somebody else's expense.
  18. The house hasn't been cleaned enough. Things have gone stale from the owner down. I don't trust hedgefunders, anyways. Time for Henry to sell the team.
  19. So i read this story tonite that Cook was spiked at homeplate in the 2nd, was allowed to stay in, and promptly got bombed in the 3rd--to put the game out of reach. After which he was removed and got 13 stitches in his leg. So the guy was kept in the game with a gash that required 13 stitches? And then I read that Middlebrooks was held out of the game because he felt a slight twinge in his hamstring. Sounds a little inconsistent to me.
  20. Funny thing, they got rid of Theo and Tito, but I get the impression nothing has changed.
  21. Maybe they are worried Middlebrooks will hit too well, and then they'll have Youks to contend with in a week or two. Don't put it past that front office. The Sox just aren't that good right now: mediocre pitching, and not enough depth to overcome injuries to key players like Ells, Youks and CC. Bailey, too.
  22. Can't blame the Angels. They got a TV windfall from Fox, and spent it--rather than pay taxes on it. They just may have spent it on the wrong guy--Pujols--who may be in decline. If so, this mistake is CC times 2. One of these days, Henry will wake up and say, "I got rid of Epstein, and took away the money. But my front office still sucks." Well, didn't Epstein hire those guys?
  23. Ha. not yet. How about Yankee closer? Robertson or Soriano? Can't tell yet. Maybe both.
