  1. It was great when Yawkey owned it. It became a garbage heap when Harrington took over. Henry has made it spotless again, but ticket prices are astronomical.
  2. Crawford looks like a square peg in a round hole in Boston. It's up to the management to define a role for him that fits his talents.
  3. Tampa Bay beat Verlander in the 9th inning the other day with 4 runs--on a couple of walks, a wild pitch, and 3 bloop hits. A reliever was responsible for a walk and a couple of those hits. Verlander had shut them out on one hit for 8 innings. That's the kind of team they are. They are scrappy.
  4. The testing is not transparent. That's one problem. The other is the technology is always ahead of the testing. Chances are, players are enhancing their performance these days with things other than steroids. HGH, for example. Those magical stem cell treatments Colon, ARod and Kobe Bryant have gotten. There's always a way when there's big money involved. The other thing that's disturbing is the biggest name abusers--Bonds, Clemens and now Braun--have all gotten off on questionable technicalities.
  5. It's all over the media: the sky is falling for the Red Sox. Last night on MLB channel, every day at the Globe. No mention they started the season with 6 tough games on the road. Didn't they have to start on the road last year, too? What gives? No mention that the Yankees' sky is falling after being swept in Tampa Bay. Just trying to put things in perspective. Relax. It's early. Stop reading the obits. Could they use a spark from one of those kids in Pawtucket? Shouldn't Bard really be closing? Well....yeah.
  6. why is this a red sox thread?
  7. Cafardo in the Globe this morning says scouts around baseball think Bard is the best closer on the team right now. He also says it seems some of their personnel decisions were made before spring training. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2012/04/12/in_this_situation_they_arent_helpless/ The Sox could use a spark on their team right now--much like the Celtics got when Bradley became a starter.
  8. No sense in speculating where that medical info about Francona came from. Trainers would know. Probably the front office. There are lots of people who work for the Red Sox, and it could have been one of many. I doubt it would come from LL or Henry. Anybody else would be possible. I suspect the same employee who told the Globe about beer and chicken also told them about Francona. That would make it somebody inside the clubhouse with medical connections as well.
  9. DD is quoting V. Don't know where the story is.
  10. Hey, so far so bad. April fools again.
  11. It's just too early to tell. The usual suspects are all there, but there might be one or two surprises. The last two World Series were won by surprises.
  12. Has V been quoted that he will start Lavarnway at catcher if he gets called up? I read that in Dirt Dogs tonite. No source. Could be V is not satisfied with Salty's game calling.
  13. Actually, he got pretty good treatment. They gave him the option of leaving on his own. They did the same with Epstein. The other option was to fire both of them publically. That's done all the time. They invited him back for the 100th anniversary as a courtesy. That he didn't accept tells you a lot. I don't think he left voluntarily. What about Epstein? Has he been invited?
  14. Come to think of it, wasn't that child molester of long ago also on the Red Sox training staff? Maybe that tells you something about training staffs. There is always going to be one bad egg in the basket who is going to be a media source. Isn't that the way some of the steroid use has gotten out? And most likely the clubhouse beer in Boston.
  15. Tito just provided further evidence that he was FIRED. Why should he come back?
  16. Whatever. still overused. 3 out of 4 games. with 13 pitchers?
  17. If a guy's velocity is way down, it usually means he has a physical problem.
  18. Aceves got the save tonite, so he's off the hook for now. But they've pitched him 3 games in a row. They're carrying 13 pitchers and still haven't figured out how not to overuse the bullpen.
  19. Like Aceves says, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.
  20. I got that impression, too, about Iggy. I'm sure many others did. Bard was the logical successor to Pap. He is groomed to close. But they needed him as starter--and he wanted to start. So they traded for a closer. OK. That's fine. But now the closer is down for half a season. So Bard has to step up. Is this a team, or what?
  21. The point is don't fix what ain't broke. When a guy is goin' good, don't change for an unknown. Not unless the guy gets into trouble. No sense in increasing the risk factor. The great Jim Leyland blew the opening game taking Verlander out with a 1-0 lead after 8 innings, 104 pitches. The "unknown", closer Valverde pitched the 9th and s*** the bed. 20 years ago, Verlander completes the game--or at least starts the 9th until he gets into trouble. There used to be a lot more common sense in the way pitchers were handled in baseball. The closer thing got out of hand with agents and fantasy saves.
